The Voice Recap: Instant Elimination Quarterfinal Twist!

by at . Comments

With all the teams narrowed to four singers, Blake Shelton and Christina Aguilera mentored their proteges on The Voice's quarterfinals Monday night ...

... and had to axe one on the spot.

That's right, ANOTHER Voice format change! In an unprecedented twist, both coaches were obligated to immediately eliminate one of their charges.

Tonight, America's votes will determine who else will go home from each team. "I think it's caught us off guard a little bit. ... It sucks," Blake said.

Blake Shelton and Christina Aguilera

From Team Blake, RaeLynn performed a rendition of Jason Aldean's "Country Girl," prompting Shelton to say he was proud and that she kicks ass.

Jermaine Paul was dubbed Christina's "favorite" after his rendition of Phil Collins' "Against All Odds." Blake called this a "turning point" for Paul.

From Aguilera's team, Ashley De La Rosa marked her 18th birthday with a rock version of Jewel's "Foolish Games" that was very well received.

Before they had to make their impossible decisions, Shelton and Aguilera each took the stage to perform with their remaining team members.

Team Christina performed Aguilera's own hit "Fighter," while Team Blake tackled the Eagles' "Heartache Tonight." Then came the hard part ...

"I was really hoping for somebody to come out here and not do a good job ... and it just didn't happen," Blake said, before eliminating Jordis Unga.

Blake based that on audience votes two weeks ago that placed her in the bottom three. Hard to blame him for that, even if he loved Jordis.

Then, in a surprise move, Aguilera opted to let Jesse Campbell go.

After Campbell's performance of Beyoncé's "Halo" earlier, Adam Levine told him he was a "huge, huge favorite" to win the entire competition.

So much for that.

Tonight, the votes of fans will decide who joins Jordis and Jesse in the former contestant category. Next week, Teams Cee Lo and Adam go for broke.

What do you think? Do you like the newest twist, and did Blake and Christina do the right things with it? Sound off on The Voice below!

I watched 'The Voice' for the first time and I was thoroughly enjoying. I was always looking forward to it, up until Christina eliminated Jesse. I was mortified by her decision. I have lost trust in the integrity of the show and as a result I will no longer be watching it-ever!

I think CA is sleeping with Chris Mann. She was going too hard on him. Did you Check out the looks on her face when he wa singing????

Look at all the people dissing Christina and basically acting like immature brats just because she got rid of a contestant they like. Grow up people. It's a competition. People you like will get sent home. Get over it. @Radiance: Actually, Christina Aguilera did have a hit last year with Adam Levine. It was a NUMBER ONE HIT and got nominated for a grammy, in fact. And even though it didn't do well, she was in a movie with Cher called Burlesque in 2010. She also had an album called Bionic in 2010; it didn't do well then, but right now it's number 17 on itunes. And she's not a hater. She makes sarcastic remarks, but so do Adam and Blake. What, they can do it but she can't? I like the banter and sarcasm between the judges. @Terri: Christina Aguilera is not fake in personality. She's real, she's confident, she's opinionated, and she's outspoken.

Such a disappointment that Jesse has been eliminated. Jesse, you have a true gift and will go far in the business. Now that America has heard your voice stardom is just around the corner!

HORRIBLE decision to let Jesse go! I hope Jesse's career takes off after this and he gets a great contract soon. Aguilera is extremely arrogant, fake, and acts like the show is all about her. We have not been watching the show because of her. We did see pictures of her outfit, tight shorts... Is she pregnant? The Voice has become another stupid reality show.

Really disapointed that Jessie was elliminated not interested in the show anymore hope Cee lo not gonna make the same mistake by sending Jamar packing.

Boy what happened to your judgement Christina and Blake? Jesse was wonderful and Christina the Great just kicked him to the curb. Very big mistake but if she can't control and mold them to her image it's out the door. Dumb! Now I come to Blake Shelton who I thought was giving his choices alot of thought darn how can you pick Erin over Raelynn? He didn't give it more than 30 seconds of thought and if Adam had liked her Blake would have probably kept her. The point is the show needs help it is now " off with their heads" and both were really good! I have been a huge fan since last year but am very disappointed!

I really can't believe Christina eliminated Jesse!!! >:(
I mean common, he was the favorite among all.,.,maybe if he did not chose Christina as his coach then maybe he had a chance to win I mean obviously, Adam thought he was terrific and that he was a favorite of all. AMERICA LOVED JESSE AND CHRISTINA SHOVED HIM DOWN!!!!!
unbelievable, what the hell was she thinking,., I mean gosh keeping Chris Mann instead of him??!! she probably has a crush on him grrrrrrrrrrrr!!so unfair, now, I don't even watch the show anymore and I'm starting to doubt Christina's LACK OF JUDGEMENT AND COMMON SENSE

Christina said it was her choice to kick Jesse. Well it is my choice to stop watching the show because of her.

Christina said the reason for eliminating Jesse was because he was the one growing the least out of all of them. My pet peeve is it wasn't clear she told Jesse he was falling behind in this area and would be eliminated if he didn't start improving. Frankly, taking the best singer off the show is a total disappointment and I do not plan to watch any longer since judges are not staying true to what I thought the intent of the show was which is to find the best voice not the one who would be coached to be the best.
