George Zimmerman Apologizes to Trayvon Martin's Family; Bail Set at $150,000

A judge granted bail for George Zimmerman at a hearing in Florida today, during which the defendant apologized to the family of Trayvon Martin.

Circuit Judge Kenneth Lester set bail at $150,000, but would not allow his release immediately, citing further discussions needed about the terms.

Lester said that Zimmerman must not contact the victim's family; must wear an ankle monitoring bracelet; and adhere to a 7 p.m.-6 a.m. curfew.

The hearing took place just a few hours after the release of a bloody photo of George Zimmerman's head taken the night of the now-infamous altercation.

Some say the photo could bolster his claim that Martin was the aggressor that night, and that he shot the teenager as an act of self-defense.

In any case, the presumption of innocence was enough to earn Zimmerman bail.

The judge's order also states that Zimmerman cannot be in possession of any firearms and must not consume alcohol or controlled substances.

Taking the stand briefly at the Seminole County Criminal Justice Center, Zimmerman addressed the parents of Martin, who were seated in court.

"I wanted to say that I am sorry for the loss of your son," he said.

"I did not know how old he was," he continued. "I thought he was a little bit younger than I am. And I did not know whether he was armed or not."

Zimmerman said he had made a similar statement to police.

"I was told not to communicate with [Martin's parents]," said the 28-year-old, who was charged with second-degree murder in the February 26 shooting.

"I did ask [my attorneys] to express that to them."

Zimmerman has been behind bars since his arrest nine days ago. His attorney, Mark O'Mara, asked the judge to let him out of jail while he awaits trial.

O'Mara also asked the judge to allow Zimmerman to leave the state while wearing a GPS bracelet, and to keep his location confidential to secure his safety.

The judge said he will consider those requests before granting the release of Zimmerman, who will almost certainly plead not guilty in the case.

Martin's parents were in the courtroom, coming face-to-face with their 17-year-old's killer for the first time. They wept at news of the bond.

After the hearing, Martin family attorney Ben Crump said Martin's parents were "very outraged" at the results of the hearing. He said:

"It was devastating that [Zimmerman] got to give a self-serving apology to help get him a bond. Why is everybody protecting George Zimmerman?"

A few days ago there was a comparison between the 200+K donated 2 GZ versus 26K donated 2 the Martins. There is no comparison. People donating 2 GZ r aware that the $$ is 4 his defense, which according 2 his lawyer could cost a million dollars. Martin donations r earmarked 4 a foundation in Trayvon's name. Conclusions based on comparing the amounts have no meaning because the donations r 4 different causes. The Martins make no financial contribution 2 GZ's prosecution.(The State of Florida is underwriting that). 26K 2 start a foundation is excellent. Besides, the Martin's will probably be awarded millions from the HOA as a direct result of what GZ did & their foolish association him.

@Todd, I found it plus alot more I didn't know. They have some damning speculative stuff out there. The media should be jumping on this, yet silence ensues.

Percussion, I dont want to give out the website name in fear that the trayvon supports will go there and fill the message board with hate, lies and personal attacks. They are trying to get a media outlet to pick up their findings and broadcast it. Of course its possible that its not true, but they have a lot of proof that I dont think could be easily created by a computer.

Todd and dd where are you reading that? Sadly read about a black nurse in Texas shooting and running over a white women for her 3 day old infant! How horrific, the woman screamed even after being shot!

Reall, this information has come out within the last 48 hours. Speculative and facts are too different things.

The website info cited by some people on this station is slanted in favor of GZ. There is nothing wrong with that. There will be pros & cons for whatever the issue. If the info documented by this cite were all true then Ms. Corey's Office would have the same info & no judge COULD have issued probable cause. Unless Ms. Corey's charges r all lies & I doubt that's the case. The Prosecutor will b trying the case, not Mr. Crump. The Prosecutor conducted an independent investigation & made charges BASED on that investigation. Info coming from other camps is speculative and political.

Crump said the girl was too distraught to attend the wake and funeral. He also said that she hospitalized due the incident. This website has PROOF that what crump said is not true. She was out and about like nothing happend. Her tweets the very next day are not that of a person who is distraught. The phone call times are not matching up. All of this PROOF discredit her and the defense attorney will have a field day with this. The site is also investigating the relationship with the PR firm, the producer who edited the 911 tapes, and Crump. This will turn the case upside down. Be prepared to hear about this next week. You heard it hear first!

I don't believe Trayvon's girlfriend lied about what she says she heard. The news org & Mr. Crump's not releasing the phone call doesn't imply that she is lying. Mr. Crump did as he should hav done- turn the info over 2 the authorities. GZ has 1 version, the girlfriend another. We'll see which version the prosecutor has. I believe the real version was reported by Trayvon's girlfriend. Trayvon asked, y r u following me? GZ asked, What r u doing here? Now that makes sense. The 1st half of the tragedy indicates GZ had a question about Trayvon being in HIS neighborhood. If he lied about that conversation. And if the prosecution has evidence that he did...

DD, I too have just come across that evidence. This is getting worse for the Martins and their entouage of Attorneys by the minute

I think Zimmerman is his own worst enemy. The judge is deciding what to do with the information.
