Bill Cosby on Trayvon Martin Case: Blame Gun Ownership

by at . Comments

Bill Cosby has weighed in on the Trayvon Martin case, but NOT on the subject of race.

The famed comedian told the Washington Times that firearms in the wrong hands are the problem, and that neighborhood watch volunteers like George Zimmerman, who shot and killed the unarmed teen, should not be allowed to carry guns.

"We've got to get the gun out of the hands of people who are supposed to be on neighborhood watch," Cosby said in his first public remarks about the case.

"Without a gun, I don't see Mr. Zimmerman approaching Trayvon by himself," Cosby added. "The power-of-the-gun mentality had this man feeling unafraid to confront someone. Even police call for backup in similar situations.

"When you carry a gun, you mean to harm somebody, kill somebody."

The Cosby Show star's remarks were immediately circulated on the Web, including some sites that take issue with Cosby's pinpointing a gun as the problem.

The 74-year-old steered clear of mentioning race in a case that has sparked allegations of racial profiling and a nationwide debate over self-defense laws.

Prosecutors charged Zimmerman with murder last week after police initially did not arrest him following the February 26 shooting death of Martin.

The Trayvon Martin case became a national obsession shortly thereafter, with the public calling for justice and questioning Florida's Stand Your Ground law.

Cosby, who has a doctorate degree in education, is known for his outspoken views on responsible parenting, education and personal accountability.

justice for trayvon

Splashnymph you a stupid hoe, you a stoo ewwww pid hoooo e. Posting under other ushers names. Plz gurl.

WHY............did "we" ever allow gun shops in the first place?

It is ok Julie, whatever you do, don't forget to take your meds lol....

Cosby can blame it on GUNS, which is lame. Next he will be blaming all of the deaths on knives/sheaths/sabres/rug cutters/baseball bats/sludge hammers/wrenches/wooden clubs etc. The list can go on, so what does he want to do next, BAN all of the COOKING UTENSILS in our kitchesn... Is this is form of a JOKE!!

I didnt really take it as all guns are bad. But more of a comment on why he was carrying a gun. Lots of people have guns in their homes but dont carry them around. There are guns in my home but i would never carry them. Unless you carry large amounts of money or need them for some job related reason, most people dont carry a gun. Black white green or purple, Zimmerman had that gun and he must have intended to pull it out at some point. Neighborhood watch people generally WATCH, not following a shoot someone. And im sure people see others in their neighborhood and make you wonder what they are doing. But again you dont follow them and shoot them. Guns are not the problem, its just they are often carried by people who shouldnt have them.

Here I go again. My compulsive behavior just kicked in! I have to pretend to be Reed and Splashnymph now. I know it's crazy of me, but I ran out of my meds. That's my excuse and I'm stickin' to it. I might despise the hatred of gays or blacks...or liberals, but I sure openly hate others on this site I can attack them in stealth ways. (But that's okay) Please don't judge me harshly..don't judge me at all! I'm really a person just crying to be understood. To be seen as an intelligent, intuitive individual that has all the right answers and can make folks think here about their views that clash with mine. I just want to be loved and admired. Yet I have a dysfunctional way of going about it, but trust me, I DO mean well.

T@Julia, I thought that the reason why he was wearing hoodie, was because of the rain. I don't know but, I was just saying and if Trayvon was going to rob somebody, would you think he could of have some kind of tools in his pocket? These are the questions that you should be thinking about. Unless that you are looking past the skin color and the damn hoodie. And Julia, are you in love with Reed? Cause gurl, you be following his every mood lol.

My mum loved the Cosby show and now I can see why. Thank you for speaking truth, Sir. How can a person with a history of domestic violence, whose former colleagues call "volatile", a man with a record of attacking an arresting officer, still be allowed to own a gun??? Come on NRA, you stretch the second ammendment just too far.
