American Idol Top 7 Recap: Who Was the Best?

by at . Comments

The American Idol Top Seven performed songs from the last three years last night, and drew mostly praise from the three judges for their contemporary covers.

A couple of singers were still a bit underwhelming, though, making for what should be an interesting, unpredictable results show Thursday evening.

How did Skylar Laine, Colton Dixon, Jessica Sanchez, Joshua Ledet, Hollie Cavanagh, Phillip Phillips and Elise Testone do? Let's find out ...

Elise Testone has been a bottom three mainstay, but the judges are rooting for her after a rousing performance of Lady Gaga's "You and I."

How hard are they pulling for her?

"That was the perfect song for you," said Randy Jackson, who declared Elise "back" and urged voters to finally recognize her talent. So pretty hard.

Skylar Laine opened the show with Kellie Pickler's "Didn't You Know How Much I Loved You," earning praise for per perfect pitch throughout.

Randy said, "You're going to have a hit with a song like that."

Phillip Phillips was one of two contestants whose marks weren't stellar. J. Lo was un-wowed by his take on Maroon 5's "Give a Little More."

"It wasn't everything that I know that you can give us," she says. Randy agreed: "I don't know if it was that 'wow' kind of a moment."

Colton Dixon said preparing a soulful version of "Love the Way You Lie" was his toughest task to date, but according to Steven Tyler, he nailed it.

"You are such a rare talent," the rocker said. "You could have recorded that right now." It was one of the more unique covers of the night.

Jessica Sanchez sang Jazmine Sullivan's "Stuttering" and set the bar high. "You sing like nobody we've ever heard sing," Jennifer said.

That's high praise, and should be enough to carry her on.

Joshua Ledet danced and sang a high-energy version of Bruno Mars's "Runaway Baby," which earned a standing ovation from the judges.

Jennifer praised him for effort, which she said was "so dynamic, it takes control of the audience, it's so much energy. It's not just the vocals."

Hollie Cavanagh's G-rated performance of Pink's "F––kin' Perfect" was lacking and may leave her singing a farewell song tonight, sadly.

"It wasn't perfect but it was a lot better than it was last week," Randy said, doing his best to console her. "You got to be proud of that."

I love Jessicas performances through and through. Her parents must be very proud, she is very talented and so humble with it. Always supportive of fellow artists and always so polite and unassuming, like - "Was I really that good ? " . You know you are Jessica, and most of the viewers do as well. Just a shame that some contributers like Cheryl (April 12th, 2012 9:06 AM) seem to think you have a bloated eg:. How crazy is that; just don't change too much Jessica - We love you just the way you are - And Youre a star already !

this jessica is awesome !

I loved Elise, Colton and Philip! I just wish to god that American Idol would change the way they do voting like all the other shows. Makes for a big disadvantage for those singers who appeal to adults instead of teenage girls. The tweenies will vote several ways all 2 hours and most adults will probably not even vote and if they do, only vote a few times. Artists like Elise (who just not has been recognized for how good she is, being in the bottom 3 all the time) appeal to older people, like myself. I think she's got a gutsy sound and just love to hear her. I also really enjoy Colton and Philip. I can't stand Jessica because she has such a bloated ego. Joshua is my 4th fav, then Skyler, however, I worry about her marketability. Hollie next and Jessica is my bottom simply because of her ego and lack of manners, like saying Thank you! So Idol, listen and change your voting so like only the first 20 calls can count. At least online voting is limited to 50.

Colton was awesome!!! Loved it!

Joshua Ledet all the way!

i love hollie, skylar and COLTON!! i would vote for jessica if she were atleast a little humble and appreciative of her talents and much less arrogant. she rarely says "thank you" and always displays the attitude "i know i'm the best, u don't have to tell me." i don't think hollie geys near enough credit...last night her performance gave me the chills...i thought it was beautiful.

jessica hands down, though elise and skylar were pretty good as well

as per my views Jessica Sanchez was best.

American Idol Quotes

Brooke White's tears come from the authentic, good soul that she is. Her heart was breaking because she was overwhelmed with the experience she had with the show and the gift that it brought.

I read some of this online this morning and just for the record, the rumors — they’re not true. She’s part of our family and we love her.
