American Idol Top 7 Recap: Who Was the Best?

by at . Comments

The American Idol Top Seven performed songs from the last three years last night, and drew mostly praise from the three judges for their contemporary covers.

A couple of singers were still a bit underwhelming, though, making for what should be an interesting, unpredictable results show Thursday evening.

How did Skylar Laine, Colton Dixon, Jessica Sanchez, Joshua Ledet, Hollie Cavanagh, Phillip Phillips and Elise Testone do? Let's find out ...

Elise Testone has been a bottom three mainstay, but the judges are rooting for her after a rousing performance of Lady Gaga's "You and I."

How hard are they pulling for her?

"That was the perfect song for you," said Randy Jackson, who declared Elise "back" and urged voters to finally recognize her talent. So pretty hard.

Skylar Laine opened the show with Kellie Pickler's "Didn't You Know How Much I Loved You," earning praise for per perfect pitch throughout.

Randy said, "You're going to have a hit with a song like that."

Phillip Phillips was one of two contestants whose marks weren't stellar. J. Lo was un-wowed by his take on Maroon 5's "Give a Little More."

"It wasn't everything that I know that you can give us," she says. Randy agreed: "I don't know if it was that 'wow' kind of a moment."

Colton Dixon said preparing a soulful version of "Love the Way You Lie" was his toughest task to date, but according to Steven Tyler, he nailed it.

"You are such a rare talent," the rocker said. "You could have recorded that right now." It was one of the more unique covers of the night.

Jessica Sanchez sang Jazmine Sullivan's "Stuttering" and set the bar high. "You sing like nobody we've ever heard sing," Jennifer said.

That's high praise, and should be enough to carry her on.

Joshua Ledet danced and sang a high-energy version of Bruno Mars's "Runaway Baby," which earned a standing ovation from the judges.

Jennifer praised him for effort, which she said was "so dynamic, it takes control of the audience, it's so much energy. It's not just the vocals."

Hollie Cavanagh's G-rated performance of Pink's "F––kin' Perfect" was lacking and may leave her singing a farewell song tonight, sadly.

"It wasn't perfect but it was a lot better than it was last week," Randy said, doing his best to console her. "You got to be proud of that."

blade and cheryl are just insecure of jessica simply because they know how great jessica is. period.

OMG, I am sorry but Joshua RUINED Brunos song!

I have just one question. How come Elise sings You and I by Lady Gaga and the judges sing her praises but Haley Reinhart did it last season, and much better in my opinion, and the judges were like wrong song choice. You should have picked a better known song! Sorry Elise but try as you might you will never have a better growl than Haley Reinhart.

@blade and cheryl: Just when didn't she say thank you? If you watch all her performances again, she actually kept on thanking everyone who has taught the fact that she listens to her mentors and you can obviously see the effects of it in her performances. If she weren't humble and had that "attitude" then she would not push herself to be better with each performance and we would just be listening to the same old thing with her. But as Jimmy would say it, she listens and she delivers. And that's a good attitude.

please give me the email address of jessica where i can send her a message please...

I think Phillip will go home tonight. He does not have the "fire in his belly" to make it in the music world. He has an attitude of, this is who I am take it or leave it. The public will lose interest in him.

We voted for Hollie. The judges want her eliminated and Randy seems to pick her out to bully. Randy LOVED James last year but James' album is NOT selling. Did Randy's company produce James' album? Will he be selling James tonight on the show? Randy was nasty to Lauren Alaina last year but SHE is successful already. LOL The first season we watch Idol Randy was not nice to Jennifer Hudson but loved Fantastia. Jennifer is the PROFESSIONAL today but Randy will claim HE made her a star tonight. LOL We tired of Randy telling us how important HE IS on Idol.

i think elise will go home tonight. skylar, colton, and phillip should be the top 3

Jessica it is! No contest!

Jessica - powerhouse performer. Picked up on everything I've been saying to her. The girl can go far. the others were ok; more later this evening. Gotta dash.

Brooke White's tears come from the authentic, good soul that she is. Her heart was breaking because she was overwhelmed with the experience she had with the show and the gift that it brought.

I read some of this online this morning and just for the record, the rumors — they’re not true. She’s part of our family and we love her.
