American Idol Top 7 Recap: Who Was the Best?

by at . Comments

The American Idol Top Seven performed songs from the last three years last night, and drew mostly praise from the three judges for their contemporary covers.

A couple of singers were still a bit underwhelming, though, making for what should be an interesting, unpredictable results show Thursday evening.

How did Skylar Laine, Colton Dixon, Jessica Sanchez, Joshua Ledet, Hollie Cavanagh, Phillip Phillips and Elise Testone do? Let's find out ...

Elise Testone has been a bottom three mainstay, but the judges are rooting for her after a rousing performance of Lady Gaga's "You and I."

How hard are they pulling for her?

"That was the perfect song for you," said Randy Jackson, who declared Elise "back" and urged voters to finally recognize her talent. So pretty hard.

Skylar Laine opened the show with Kellie Pickler's "Didn't You Know How Much I Loved You," earning praise for per perfect pitch throughout.

Randy said, "You're going to have a hit with a song like that."

Phillip Phillips was one of two contestants whose marks weren't stellar. J. Lo was un-wowed by his take on Maroon 5's "Give a Little More."

"It wasn't everything that I know that you can give us," she says. Randy agreed: "I don't know if it was that 'wow' kind of a moment."

Colton Dixon said preparing a soulful version of "Love the Way You Lie" was his toughest task to date, but according to Steven Tyler, he nailed it.

"You are such a rare talent," the rocker said. "You could have recorded that right now." It was one of the more unique covers of the night.

Jessica Sanchez sang Jazmine Sullivan's "Stuttering" and set the bar high. "You sing like nobody we've ever heard sing," Jennifer said.

That's high praise, and should be enough to carry her on.

Joshua Ledet danced and sang a high-energy version of Bruno Mars's "Runaway Baby," which earned a standing ovation from the judges.

Jennifer praised him for effort, which she said was "so dynamic, it takes control of the audience, it's so much energy. It's not just the vocals."

Hollie Cavanagh's G-rated performance of Pink's "F––kin' Perfect" was lacking and may leave her singing a farewell song tonight, sadly.

"It wasn't perfect but it was a lot better than it was last week," Randy said, doing his best to console her. "You got to be proud of that."

Jessica's good but philipinoes can't afford to spam smses on their phone. Its not a singing competition and we rednecks ain't gonna let some punk ass chink win this thing even though she might be the best.

I love Jessica. She has the best voice. If compare with everyone in this season. Unfortunately she's not real American But She's a real talented. She's incredible.

I am glad Jessica was saved. She deserved to be.

Fuck you guys!!!!

I'm rooting for jessica sanchez, her voice is cool and so soulful; she sounds so mature and delivers with such poise i think she's going to be big, bigger than idol.

Unfortuately, Hollie will go tonight...I think she has a great voice but she is not an entertainer...she always seems nervous or out of place. If were are ranking them, this is how I see it: 1. Jessica
2. Josh
3. Phillip
4. Skylar
5. Colton
6. Elise
7. Hollie @girlsturn: Have you ever heard of Dave Matthews?

I voted for Hollie 450 times. Don't care about any of the rest of them. I voted only for Drew in XF. Never voted after she was gone. Can't even see anyone I care about on Voice.

I cannot stand Phillip Phillips PERIOD>....from the very beginning, i thought he sucks as a singer....don't understand all the hype about him...I think he's weird, and hopefully, he'll go home tonite....Jessica Sanchez should be this years winner Hands Down....nobody can even compare to her, and her's the girls turn this year.......the last couple of years with the guys winning were disgusting....haven't heard from anyone of them, and honestly speaking i don't even remember there names...all of them were FORGETTABLE......nuf said......

ilove jesica sanchez your so great
colton dixon ilove the way u sing
goodluck both of u

Elise is my favorite and when she sang "Whole Lotta Love" the week before, it showed how good of a singer she is. I would definitely buy her music!

American Idol Quotes

Brooke White's tears come from the authentic, good soul that she is. Her heart was breaking because she was overwhelmed with the experience she had with the show and the gift that it brought.

I read some of this online this morning and just for the record, the rumors — they’re not true. She’s part of our family and we love her.
