Rush Limbaugh Losing Sponsors Over Sandra Fluke "Slut" Remarks

by at . Comments

Rush Limbaugh is literally paying for the comments he made this week about Sandra Fluke.

On Thursday, the Georgetown University Law School student - who has been a vocal supporter of the Obama administration's decision to require insurance companies, even those used by religiously-affiliated employers, to cover the cost of contraception - was denied a chance to speak at a House Oversight and Government Reform hearing on religious liberty and birth control.

She proceeded, though, to take part in a press conference in which Fluke told the story of a friend who was prescribed birth control to deal with ovarian cysts; could not afford the cost when school insurance refused to pay for it; and has since suffered grave medical consequences as a result.

Fluke also said the price of birth control in general can be thousands a year. Limbaugh's response?

He referred to Fluke as a "slut" and a "prostitute" and added:

"If we're going to pay for your contraceptives and thus pay for you to have sex, we want something for it. We want you to post the videos online so we can all watch."

Limbaugh said that her speech made it clear "she's having so much sex she can't pay for it, and we should."

(NOTE TO RUSH: That's not how birth control works. You don't pop a pill each time you have intercourse.)

The issue has since taken on national prominence, with President Obama even calling Fluke and telling her her parents ought to be proud of her actions. And now the scandal has hit the Internet.

The hashtag #BoycottRush has spread around Twitter and two Facebook pages calling for a boycott have garnered more than 18,000 and 6,000 Likes by this morning. Moreover, nine companies - including Legal Zoom, Citrix Success, Heart and Body Extract, AutoZone and Quicken Loans - have pulled ads from Limbaugh's show.

Where do you stand on this issue? Should Limbaugh have referred to the student as a "slut?

Just watched his video....amazingly ignorant man. Just the way he said "she wants us to pay for her sex"...and talking about having sex...etc....wow...what an attitude towards women I detect. He doesn't even know how insurance works either...the women probably pay a fee in their tuition toward the medical care, thus they should have a say in what is covered. Lastly, its too bad that the students don't seem to know there are lots of options usually available for medical care through state health dept clinics, etc. that will provide and that money is already allocated. I do, however, believe that insurance companies should cover oral contraceptives at all times. Like others have said, they are used for medical situations as well as pregnancy avoidance. I am just shocked and saddened by the hateful, spiteful things said that indicate misogyny at its "finest". Keeping women in their place, etc. Its sad.

@Cousin Inbred: You obviously don't understand birth control either. The woman did not say she had hundreds of sex partners. The amount of money a woman on birth control in a year does not indicate how many sex partners she has.

Companies should know what they're putting their name behind when they sponsor Rush Limbaugh's radio show. They should know his happily-voiced views on the issues, and that many of these views are extremely controversial. They should know what the business deal would entail: he plugs them on his show, and they support him financially. But you shouldn't have sponsored him IN THE FIRST PLACE if you don't want your name behind his comments. Duh..

By the reading of most of these comments--it seems hate rules the day. We have freedom of speech-and the freedom to dislike speech. We all say things we wish we had not. I find most of these posts just as hateful and hurtful as what Rush said. Saying he should never have been born??? I MUST take birth control as having a child could result in my death--but no one but me is responsible for paying for it. The companies themselves have ways to help--and I have used those. It is NO ONE'S responsibility to pay for the drugs I need--than mine. But everyone also has to take responsibility for the things they say as well. Too much hate speech on here.

*I have the usual emotion of wishing people Well, but in the case of Rush Limbaugh,I am looking forward to more sponsors leaving his lair. Newt Gingrich was on "This Week with George Stephanopulos" and when he was asked about Limbaugh's language, Gingrich talked all around the subject without answering the question, and then changing the subject. I can easily appreciate the encouragement that is being willed into the direction of Ms. Fluke at this time. No one deserves to be singled out and degraded on the airwaves the way that she was introduced to those who had Not witness her messages before. Limbaugh threw her Name out into the masses with a complete disregard of dignity. Hopefully, by the time that his Name is dragged around he will begin to feel like the manure that he has been for years, and it taken the quiet reserve of Sandra Fluke to present it to the world. Limbaugh is rotten to the core!!

Uhhh... married women use birth control, too. I like how some men don't realize that prevention of unwanted pregnancies falls almost entirely on women. Remember that next time you "forget your condom" but you "really NEED it, baby".

Rush Limbaugh is exactly the reason we need birth control.....to stop the creation of vial, hateful, fat bald men who criticize women by calling them prostitutes then acting like one himself after his sponsors pull their advertising money and he then issues an apology to get their money back. HA!!!! What irony!! Go Sandra Fluke!!!!!!!!!

WHY DIDN'T LIMBAUGH'S MOTHER USE BIRTH CONTROL? SHE WOULD HAVE SAVED THE REPUBLICANS A LOT OF TROUBLE.

@cheeky -you said it best!
...why do men think women are whores...when who do they think the women are sleeping with?-and the men get away with no name calling at them. plus birth control is taken (as said in the piece) not every time a woman is intimate. contraception should be free, it prevents unwanted babies from this harsh world.

The purpose of insurance is to transfer financial liability of an unexpected loss resulting from an unkown event not to provide condoms or birth control pills. A woman who has had hundreds of different sex partners and can't afford contaceprives is by very dfinition a slut. At least that is what we used to call them in high school. Today.........?
