President Obama on Trayvon Martin Case: If I Had A Son, He'd Look Like Trayvon

by at . Comments

President Obama has weighed in on the Trayvon Martin case, calling it a tragedy, urging cooperation among law enforcement and "soul searching" among all of us.

"If I had a son, he'd look like Trayvon," the Commander-in-Chief said, underscoring how the issue affected him on a personal, and not just a political or legal, level.

Of what Martin's parents are suffering through, Obama said:

"I think they are right to expect that all of us are going to take this with the seriousness it deserves, and we are going to get to the bottom of what happened."

"Obviously, this is a tragedy. I can only imagine what these parents are going through, and when I think about this boy, I think about my own kids."

"I think that every parent in America should be able to understand why it is absolutely imperative that we investigate every aspect of this, and that everybody pulls together - federal, state and local - to figure out exactly how this tragedy happened."

The statement by Obama came after he introduced Dartmouth President Jim Kim to be the next head of the World Bank during an appearance in the Rose Garden.

He took only one question before heading back to the West Wing, signaling that he was feeling pressure to make a public comment on the Trayvon Martin case.

Obama was careful not to get too far ahead of events.

He said he was wary of "impairing" the legal process but praised the fact that federal, state and local law enforcement are now working together on Martin's death.

"I think all of us have to do some soul searching to figure out how does something like this happen," he added. "And that means we examine the laws and the context for what happened, as well as the specifics of the incident."

George Zimmerman, the man who shot Martin in late February, has avoided arrest so far by evoking the Stand Your Ground law in Florida, which allows individuals broad latitude to claim self defense in wielding a firearm.

Florida is one of 21 states with such laws, which have since come under intense scrutiny even by previous supporters. Prior to that law being passed in Florida, there were 13 "justified" killings in the state each year.

Since then, there have been 36, as reported by the Associated Press.

The case has attracted widespread media attention, given the broad spectrum of issues it covers. Geraldo Rivera's comments that Martin made himself into a target by wearing a hooded sweatshirt sparked controversy last week.

Neci...You sound like one heck of a racist to me. I heard the 911 call and there were no racial slurs from Zimmerman. The man had a broken nose and lacerations on the back of his skull from the kid hitting his head against the pavement. At that point, I would have shot him also. It's a shame it had to come to that and I feel for the boys parents, but with this lastest bit of info, it clearely was self defense!!!

I remember a few years ago a black womman accused a white cop, I think in NY, of raping her and ruined his career, only months later to admit she lied. Did fat Al Sharpton apologize to the office...Hell NO!!! If there was no racisim there would be no use for the Al Sharptons or Jesse Jacksons. Therefore they must create some. I believe oour currant president opened his mouth a little soon on this one also.If this kid was white, you would hardly hear about it.

I agree with blank space. DID YOU KNOW THE WITNESS IS AFRICAN AMERICAN?? So think about that.

Yes, we are not aware of all the facts, but what is out there is common sense...even if it were the other way around and Martin was the 28 year old who called 911 and pursued a suspicious looking 17 year old hoodie wearing Zimmerman.

@Hugh/ You are exactly right. Not only that but with the Laws in this Country -you can be charged with a Race Crime if you make a derogatory comment about race before you attack him. If not/ it's not a race crime! Channon Christian & Christiphor Newsom tortured for 2 days then murdered in Knoxville by 5 Blacks but since they dated whites and associated with whites they were not charged with a race crime. If you read this story you will see this Law is Bullshit! These 5 were Racist! @ Bystander/ This standby and watch is more common than you know! If you need help you better hope you have a family member with you.

It shouldn't matter if the person is black, white, hispanic, asian, or whatever. Zimmerman should not be allowed to get away with killing someone after he pursued them even after law enforcement told him not to. If he had suspicions, a phone call to authorities should have been all he did. He obviously wasn't too scared of Martin for him to go following someone who seem suspicious...and how about the fact that he was armed the whole time...

Crazy all these so called witnesses coming out of the woodwork who were no where to be found when it was looking like Zimmerman would get away with MURDER because of a Stand Your Ground Law...if Martin was bashing his head into the curb I could understand it, he was defending himself...the 911 call clearly recorded Zimmerman in pursuit of Martin when all Martin did was walk by Zimmerman wearing a hoodie and by Zimmerman's perception was "suspicious" looking. If someone was following me, I would feel threatened as well feeling I might have to make a move on them before they make a move on me.
