President Obama on Trayvon Martin Case: If I Had A Son, He'd Look Like Trayvon

by at . Comments

President Obama has weighed in on the Trayvon Martin case, calling it a tragedy, urging cooperation among law enforcement and "soul searching" among all of us.

"If I had a son, he'd look like Trayvon," the Commander-in-Chief said, underscoring how the issue affected him on a personal, and not just a political or legal, level.

Of what Martin's parents are suffering through, Obama said:

"I think they are right to expect that all of us are going to take this with the seriousness it deserves, and we are going to get to the bottom of what happened."

"Obviously, this is a tragedy. I can only imagine what these parents are going through, and when I think about this boy, I think about my own kids."

"I think that every parent in America should be able to understand why it is absolutely imperative that we investigate every aspect of this, and that everybody pulls together - federal, state and local - to figure out exactly how this tragedy happened."

The statement by Obama came after he introduced Dartmouth President Jim Kim to be the next head of the World Bank during an appearance in the Rose Garden.

He took only one question before heading back to the West Wing, signaling that he was feeling pressure to make a public comment on the Trayvon Martin case.

Obama was careful not to get too far ahead of events.

He said he was wary of "impairing" the legal process but praised the fact that federal, state and local law enforcement are now working together on Martin's death.

"I think all of us have to do some soul searching to figure out how does something like this happen," he added. "And that means we examine the laws and the context for what happened, as well as the specifics of the incident."

George Zimmerman, the man who shot Martin in late February, has avoided arrest so far by evoking the Stand Your Ground law in Florida, which allows individuals broad latitude to claim self defense in wielding a firearm.

Florida is one of 21 states with such laws, which have since come under intense scrutiny even by previous supporters. Prior to that law being passed in Florida, there were 13 "justified" killings in the state each year.

Since then, there have been 36, as reported by the Associated Press.

The case has attracted widespread media attention, given the broad spectrum of issues it covers. Geraldo Rivera's comments that Martin made himself into a target by wearing a hooded sweatshirt sparked controversy last week.

This is one big racial story! Are we really gonna get Obama involved? I sure hope he has more important things to do! Rediculous! And what about the Black Panthers? Now can the white people go out and put on white sheets again and that will be o.k.?? oh yeah lets see how that goes. How many whites would be arrested? Oh yeah and can we now start a ralley and scream WHITE POWER!!!! Where is TEAM ZIMMERMAN? Is he guilty cuz alot of racist black people say he is? Shut up and let the police figure it out

I think that Obama's televised speech was inappropriate. Was it in the protocol of the President to go on TV and speak about a shooting? A phone call to the parents would be more appropriate. And why did he honor just one child who was killed? I think he should have conferred with his wife the lawyer and maybe she would have silenced him till all the facts were in. Innocent till proven guilty or did we forget? Makes me ashamed and afraid to be an American. I am rethinking my presidential candidate.

Obama says above that we must "examine the laws". What! Him and Holder are going to make our laws even more biased in favor of minorities to where the guilty of color are allowed to go free?

We need justice, who does he think he is!!!!!!!

The recording on 911 they specific told him to back off n he continue pursuing the issue he needs to be in jail we put drug dealers, etc.criminals in jail n he needs to be too we have to,put a stop too all these young children getting killed for no reason at all he only had iced tea n Skittles in pocket then they wonder why our soceity today is the way it is when u do smtg minor u get locked up n when u do smtg so serious as this ur free take serious I have a child n breaks my heart to kw he is Free!!!(Justice)

@So What!...funny because I never said he was a racist...but it proves he had reservations (hatred) about him which was probably a reason he pursued him...."they" always get away...who is "they"??? That wasn't a "black" or a "white" you may have hear...Zimmerman lived in that neighborhood as well...and it is ridiculous that you would black invade white neighborhood...a crime is a matter who does it. I hate it that people are making this a race thing, but that IS how it seems. It shouldn't matter if the guy is black, white, hispanic, asian, or whatever...he shouldn't have pursued that boy...he should have stayed in his truck and waited for the cops...
It should be the same for Martin if the roles were reversed.

His Mother said they killed my SON? Who is THEY? ' any ideas?

So what if he calls him a coon! Big deal! Does that make him a Racist? No! If someone calls me a " Honkey" does that make him a Racist? No! Maybe Prejudice- but not necessarly a Racist! This Race law needs to be changed! It was created to defend Minorites and it has done nothing but cloud the actual crime! If this is the case- why isn't IT Racist when a Black invades - shoots someone in a white neighborhood? It sould be also! They knew they were in a white neighborhood. That Law is not JUST!

He had no reason to pursue him…..( his perception alone seemed to be tainted…
Again, RACE to me doesn’t matter…the altercation wouldn’t have happened had Zimmerman just made the call and not went looking for trouble like he apparently does often…if it were the other way around I would feel that same about Martin…it is not right..period.

Wrong…that interview was tailored/edited by the media…the full interview here where he states what is said in that one except it is his entire interview ( )…also, a white lady and a hispanic lady are witnesses as well…( ) ( )( )
The interviews by the boy say Zimmerman was on the ground …had Zimmerman not followed Martin like he was instructed to an altercation would not have occurred…here is the 911 tape…listen carefully…because Zimmerman even calls him “coon too as he continues to follow him after being told not to. ( He said ok yes, but he did continue to follow him ( ( ) you can still hear his heavy breathing following him and commenting Martin’s location.
