Michelle Duggar Denies Adverse Impact on Earth, Says Entire Population Could Live in Jacksonville

by at . Comments

To anyone accusing her of being wasteful or irresponsible on a planet already short on resources, Michelle Duggar of 19 Kids and Counting offers a strong rebuke.

In an interview with the Christian Broadcasting Network, Michelle was asked how one can justify having such a large family in an already overpopulated world.

Duggar said overpopulation is basically a myth. Why? Get ready for this ...

Jim Bob, Michelle Duggar, Family

"The idea of overpopulation is not accurate because, really, the whole world population, standing shoulder to shoulder, could fit in the city limits of Jacksonville."

"So if you realize that aspect, we're not anywhere near being overpopulated."

Who knew Jacksonville was that big? Take that, science. Step off.

Michelle Duggar did, with all due respect, go on to discuss how buying used cars, old clothing and living resourcefully can reduce a family's environmental impact.

They also have no debts, reducing their financial burden on others.

Nevertheless, a family of 21? Probably more of strain on the environment than one half its size. Or a quarter of its size. Carbon footprints do exist, like it or not.

According to Duggar - who does specialize in a terrific Duggars Tater Tot Casserole recipe -  other countries have death rates that eclipse birth rates (it's actually quite rare), so there can never be too many babies. Huh?

Anyway, we're done. Your turn. Is it okay to have 19 kids?

Maybe then we should stop overpopulation in Africa or Asia, where those people reproduce in poverty like animals. Then we will eliminate all those ads on TV as for how to help those poor...

They're a scary clan of lunatics. TLC has done a great job of diluting or outright hiding their crazier beliefs, but, overpopulation or not, their "quiverfull" and dominionist beliefs in particularly the role of women (women should be *entirely* subservient and submissive to men, and exist only to have children and serve) are kind of terrifying. AND they want their particular, extreme version of Christianity to be the ultimate law of the land. I mean, come on, it's 2012, and we're glorifying a family with a positively medieval view of women's rights and individual liberty?

YES THEY HAVE MANY CHILDREN, BUT THE QUALITY OF CHILDREN THEY HAVE IS FANTASTIC! THOSE ARE GOOD, WELL MANNERED, GODLY CHILDREN. WE NEED MORE!!! THEY ARE A PRECIOUS FAMILY THAT I THANK GOD FOR. I PRAISE HIM FOR THEIR COURAGE TO STAND FOR THEIR FAITH IN THE PUBLIC EYE.

I'm not sure on the Jacksonville comment, but she's right. We are not overcrowded. We just don't use our resources as we should.
And, your question is stupid - yes it's okay to have 19 children. Not something I would do, but it's a free country, she can do what she wants.

I in no way want to disrespect their family, but the worlds population "cannot" fit into Jacksonville. She tries to speak like an educated woman because TLC has given this show, but please once you have almost lost a child God give you the common sense to stop! I live where they do and the whole state thinks their crazy! They have no bills because TLC is paying them all, wouldn't you like their vacations?

What a refreshing, Christian show to watch and share with your family. Truly a calming, peaceful time when "19 Kids & Counting" is on. Their high standards are truly a Blessing and if we ALL could follow just 1/2 of the Duggar's values, the world would be a Greater Place. God Bless the Duggar's always, and I Pray I/My Family can learn and somehow shadow this Family.

I'm not worries about it. Families of this size are few and far between in the world these days. I'm sure there are enough over-population zealots who have opted not to have children that it cancels out the many this family decided to have. Just leave them ALONE. They're a nice family who have unconventional beliefs. They're not hurting anyone.

This is just a silly talking point. 7 billion people could be jammed cheek by jowl into that area, 740 square miles. But if you include the elderly and the dying and the babies being born to women in labor and the time and money to move them all to jam into close quarters to stand in close formation for days, well you come to realize just how silly this factoid is. You could do this if the Creator decided to transport everyone into close proximity to prove the Creator can take care of as many of us as the Duggars can produce. But that same Creator permits millions of children to die from easily treatable diseases from dirty water and malnourishment.

I thought there were 21 of them, counting Josh. If you add his family, 24 total. Someone correct me if I'm wrong. I guess 22 if you count jim bob's mom. If you do that then you have to count all extended family.
