Kirk Cameron Defends Anti-Gay Views, Touts "Life's Mission to Love All People"

by at . Comments

Under fire for his anti-gay comments on Piers Morgan Tonight, former Growing Pains star Kirk Cameron defended himself in a Facebook post Tuesday.

His tone was less combative and his comments much better-worded, but Kirk did not apologize for his beliefs, or the manner in which he voiced them.

In fact, Cameron criticized the media and those contributing to the backlash, defending principles he stands for and the right to express them publicly.

The actor defended his appearance on CNN (below) this way:

"During the CNN interview, I was asked to express my views about homosexuality, gay marriage, and abortion. While that was not the agreed-upon purpose of the interview, I was pleased to answer Piers' questions as honestly as I could.

"To some, my responses were not sufficiently 'loving' toward the gay community. I can only say that it is my life's mission to love all people, and I expressed the same views clearly and emphatically expressed throughout Judeo-Christian scriptures."

"As a Bible believing Christian, I could not have answered any other way."

"I've been encouraged by the support of many friends (including gay friends, incidentally) in the wake of condemnation by some political advocacy groups."

"In the case of one of my gay friends, we regularly talk and have healthy and respectful debate. We learn from each other, and serve others alongside one another."

"I thank God for all of my friends... even when they hold very different views on issues of faith and morality. I do not, however, believe that the right way to advance our views is to resort to name-calling and personal attacks, as some have done to me."

"I also believe that freedom of speech and freedom of religion go hand-in-hand in America. I should be able to express moral views on social issues - especially those that have been the underpinning of Western civilization for 2,000 years - without being slandered, accused of hate speech, and told from those who preach 'tolerance' that I need to either bend my beliefs to their moral standards or be silent when I'm in the public square."

"I hope more than a few people could see the large volume of secularist morality being imposed on me. In any society that is governed by the rule of law, some form of morality is always imposed. It's inescapable."

"But it is also a complicated subject, and that is why I believe we need to learn how to debate these things with greater love and respect."

GLAAD was unsatisfied with the star's explanation and offered its own response:

"Saying that gay people are 'detrimental to civilization' might be 'loving' in Kirk Cameron's mind, but it's gay youth and victims of bullying who truly suffer from adults like Cameron who espouse these ideas," said senior director Herndon Graddick.

Cameron blasted gay marriage and homosexuality for being "destructive to so many of the foundations of civilization" and said if one if his sons told him he was gay, he would encourage him to "work through" those "issues."

What do you think? Is Kirk out of line? Or is he right on the money? Is there a double standard - at least in how certain views are treated by the media?

Red,
I LIKE the way you think!!! But, I have something else that I wanna say. This is what pisses me off...certain churches emotionally condemn gay people. But, yet, when it comes to dirtbag priests who are pedophiles...the certain churches either (1) sweep the problem under the rug or (2) re-locate/transfer the dirtbag priests to another church. OR BOTH!!! BEYOND CREEPY!!! To me, the people running these certain churches are nothing but hypocrites and cowards!!! Red, you are so RIGHT ON...Kirk just wants money!!! Most of all, Kirk is STILL the same two-faced, self-righteous and preachy MORON from when he was on "Growing Pains." And, by the way, my all-time FAVORITE character from "Growing Pains" was Maggie (the mom). LOL!!!
Sincerely,

Hello again to all you Moron Kirk supporters, Let me just see if I have this correct. It's ok with you all to let your priests (the leaders of your so called pure religion) to be pedophiles and fondle little boys (which if I am correct is pretty gay in itself). That's OK, lets just turn the other cheek and relocate them to a different church, but let them get away with it. But it's not OK for two people who love each other to get married, because they are of the same sex. Please you are all Hippocrates and your too stupid to realize that Kirk doesn't give a crap about you. He wants your money. So please continue to support him you stupid clowns. I love it... LOL. Love Me

Q "What are your views on homosexuality?"
A "I have a Christian worldview. I believe that there is a God and the Bible is His Word and a book of truth. An owner's manual for how to live life."
Q "But what is your view on homosexuality?"
A "I just told you. The Bible is clear on this subject. It doesn't leave us guessing what is Biblical view of right and wrong. If you choose to disagree with the Biblical view of right and wrong, that's your choice. But what if God is right and you are wrong? What if God is smarter than you?" Q "But isn't that just bigotry?"
A "It's only bigotry if you can't accept my answer. I accept your right to disagree with my religion. Do you believe in freedom of religious expression? Do you hate people who don't share your religious views?" "No. Of course not." "Good. Then we're okay." God Bless

We should be allowed to state our opinions in the public square. I agree with Kirk Cameron in his views. I don't hate anyone because they are gay. I know a few people who are and truthfully they are very entertaining and funny people and I enjoy their company. It just lies in the fact that I disagree on that one thing.....man/man woman/woman. Just like I would not choose to put mustard on my hamburger even if they chose to put mustard on theirs they have that right to choose that decision....or choose the same car they drive. It's a matter of belief and your view on marriage/relationships. We don't know why God has laid out marriage to be done the way He arranged it, but we do know that in all areas of life every one of us falls short of perfection.

i to dont think gay relationships are right. but if people can have freedom of speach and freedom to choose what they want to do what bad is gay marriage gonna do. If god gives us free will. Then you should have a right to choose if you want to get married to the same sex or the opposite sex. didnt god say he gives you free will to choose. even though we dont think its right people have a right to choose.

I believe everyone has a right to their own opinion. and no one is forcing anyone to change. Its not like hes one of those one christians holding up a sign and telling them that they are all going to hell if they dont change. Someone ask and he has to tell them what he believes in its their fault for asking. IF you dont want someones opinions dont ask. You cant force someone to go against what they believe in just because you dont think its right. Like i dont believe people should be with the same sex but they do and it doesnt really bother me i dont put them down for it i know they live their life but it dont meen i have to agree with it. diffrent people do diffrent things. who cares.

What is wrong with these hateful hypocrites posting here? There are gay people in this world and they don't deserve discrimination & hate. Deal with it. Also, Christianity teaches to judge not, lest yet be judged. These bigots forget that and pick & choose their beliefs. If they were so devout, they would not eat shellfish, or wear artificial fabric. Also, they forget to realize that the Bible was written and edited and rewritten by many different men; men with their own opinions & agendas. This has been happening throughout the history of Christianity. Hypocrisy, not God, reigns in most Churches today. Shame on those who claim to know His will and spread hate in His name.

I am a devout lifelong Christian. My biggest concern is that quite often a powerful fellow Christian starts espousing intensely anti-gay ideas, they turn out to be closeted homosexuals themselves, ending up in gay sex scandals. I have discussed this with my pastor and he agrees that there is a significant pattern here. From J. Edgar Hoover to attorney Roy Cohn to Senator Larry Craig and Pastor Ted Haggard. I am not comfortable with Kirk Cameron's enthusiastic zeal regarding gay sex etc. The last thing I want is for it to come out that this nice young man and devoted Christian is just another closeted gay man protesting too much. Fingers crossed. God bless.

You know, sometimes I come to sites like these just to see how misguided and outright delusional some folks are. I don't mean that in the "you disagree with me, therefore you're crazy and wrong" way I mean that in the "Christianity is under attack in the states even though we make up the vast majority of the population and have known all along that the country was built on a separation of religion and government!!!!! PRAISE JESUS! SATAN is taking over USA with anal sex between dudes!! GOD is my saviour! Random CAPITALIZING of words! NO EQUAL RIGHTS FOR SINNERS!!!!!! BLARGHHHHHH!!! USA! USA!" kind of way.
