Marianne Gingrich Says Newt Wanted Open Marriage, Lacks Moral Character to Be President

by at . Comments

Just 48 hours before the critical South Carolina primary, Republican presidential candidate Newt Gingrich's ex-wife Marianne is criticizing the former House Speaker's character.

Marianne Gingrich says, in an interview airing tonight on Nightline, that Newt's professed positions on marriage and family values do not line up with his actions.

Their 18-year marriage ended in 1999, and during that span, Marianne says Newt Gingrich admitted to her about a six-year affair with a Congressional aide.

That woman is now Newt's third wife, Callista Gingrich. This is well documented, but it's a comment Newt allegedly made about it that's raising eyebrows:

He asked his wife if she would share him with Callista, according to Marianne.

"I just stared at him and he said, 'Callista doesn't care what I do.' He wanted an open marriage and I refused," Marianne Gingrich tells ABC News.

Marianne also details how Newt was conducting this affair while publicly condemning the unfaithful President Clinton for his lack of moral leadership.

“How could he ask me for a divorce on Monday and within 48 hours give a speech on family values and talk about how people treat people?” she said.

“Truthfully, my whole purpose is to get out there about who I am, so Newt couldn’t create me as an evil, awful person, which was starting to happen.”

It gets worse. Newt divorced Marianne months after she was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis, she says, and began dating her almost as scandalously.

Her relationship with Newt started before his divorce from his first wife, Jackie, was finalized. And he left Jackie while she was undergoing cancer treatment.

Political pundits call this "baggage." Can he overcome it? Newt, who is trying to sustain recent momentum, responded to this interview on Today, saying:

"I'm not going to say anything negative about Marianne."

"My two daughters, Kathy and Jackie, have sent a letter to the president of ABC News saying from a family perspective, they think this is totally wrong."

"They think that ABC should not air anything like this. And that intruding into family things that are more than a decade old are simply wrong."

"I think that my two daughters are very credible on my character, I think the people who have known me a long time are credible on my character."

"We have lots of folks willing to speak on this, I'm not going to."

The letter of which he speaks that his daughters wrote says, "The failure of a marriage is a terrible and emotional experience for everyone involved."

Newt "regrets any pain he may have caused in the past to people he loves," they say, echoing sentiments Newt has made on the campaign trail.

Gingrich often speaks of his mistakes, admitting he is imperfect. The question is now much baggage is too much for voters to potentially take.

He should get a modest boost from Rick Perry dropping out of the race today, and has another debate tonight to make his case in South Carolina.

@Skip-I agree-The Public -They were a lot more Desperate than we imagined back In 2008. Hispanics? I'm not so sure-They want to work and they are not having much success. Whites were caught with their guard down in 2008. We took it for granted and didn't go to the Polls like we should have. 63% of the Population that were qualified to vote did in 2008- the highest % since 1968.. Blacks? Obama is Black and it's Payback Time. The Strange-Resentful- Anti American-Liberal Whites who believe the World Started the day they were Born-That will tell the tale. If he does get re-elected-by the end of the 1st year we will be Crippled. For some Reason this Country feels we must tear it all Down and Start over once a Generation or so. . 2 things for sure-#1 He is not a Leader by any stretch of the imagination . #2 Regardless of the outcome- there will be some BITTER People for years to come.

Reed I feel your passion, brother, but how can Obama lose? He will, again, get 95% of the black vote, plus a large percentage of the hispanic and jewish vote. Many races are conditioned to vote democrat regardless of which candidate makes the most sense. I have tried to talk logic to some black people and it just doesn't work, they hear what they want to hear. Barack is all about free handouts, and lots of people want a freebee. They do not realize that the free lunch will not last forever.

@Neci-I'm done with your Fucked up ass! Don't tell me shit again-Your lost in a Racist Sea of Disarray.

@Steven-I agree. But he is right on -This False Sense of Security is ruining Blacks. This Race card like everything else in Life will run its course. The thought of paying Social Security-'Saving for Retirement- Not milking the System- Trying to accountable for Your Family and to think- This President wants to Handcuff us with Higher Taxes and some Welfare run Health Care Subsitute- He will not create Jobs ( Pipeline) This is worth taking to the Streets for. If people believe that 50% will support the other 50%- That is a Fools Logic. Obama is a Arrogant-Lazy-Smug Son of a Bitch and We are one Election away from Utter Chaotic Disaster.

Neci you are missing the point. Rev. Manning is a PhD, he is not stupid. Him and Larry Elder are trying to say that the problems blacks face have nothing to do with the color of their skin, but the fact that many feel things are OWED to them. Nobody owes anybody anything. However, in the real world, blacks cry racism and get whatever they want. I have seen it. Unity will occur when we as a people work together, not against one another. I wish you could see what white people see when they view the videos of Rev. Manning and Larry Elder.

@Reed, i did look on youtube for a black name Rev. Manning. And that just break my heart to hear and see a black man to talk about his on race like that. Reed i don't know what you was trying to proven, but that really wasn't kool at all for anybody to look at on youtube. That is some hurtful mess and i do believe that Mr. Manning was mistreated from somebody in his family or whoever that maybe could of been black. I don't believe any race deserve to be anybody slaves. What kind of mess is that?

Reed, I went to the video of Rev. Manning as you suggested. Very compelling. However, white people cannot just tell black folks who cry racism to shut up. The power of the race card is too strong. What needs to happen is there needs to be a new organization formed, similar to the NAACP, that stands up for the things Rev. Manning preaches. Only then will things change. Can you imagine a organization with both whites and blacks such as Rev. Manning, Larry Elder, and Bill Cosby working together? That would be amazing! This new organization could speak out against the likes of Al Sharpton and Jesse Jackson and bring hard working people together in unity, and put these lazy trouble makers in their place. Only then will the trouble makers learn to accept responsibility for all they lack and begin to start working for a living, like the rest of us.

Neci, sending you love, Sweetie. Again, didn't mean any disrespect.

Manning- He is the only Person I've heard speak on the Topic of Race in which I would agree with everything he said. Good Stuff!!!!!!!!
