Marianne Gingrich Says Newt Wanted Open Marriage, Lacks Moral Character to Be President

by at . Comments

Just 48 hours before the critical South Carolina primary, Republican presidential candidate Newt Gingrich's ex-wife Marianne is criticizing the former House Speaker's character.

Marianne Gingrich says, in an interview airing tonight on Nightline, that Newt's professed positions on marriage and family values do not line up with his actions.

Their 18-year marriage ended in 1999, and during that span, Marianne says Newt Gingrich admitted to her about a six-year affair with a Congressional aide.

That woman is now Newt's third wife, Callista Gingrich. This is well documented, but it's a comment Newt allegedly made about it that's raising eyebrows:

He asked his wife if she would share him with Callista, according to Marianne.

"I just stared at him and he said, 'Callista doesn't care what I do.' He wanted an open marriage and I refused," Marianne Gingrich tells ABC News.

Marianne also details how Newt was conducting this affair while publicly condemning the unfaithful President Clinton for his lack of moral leadership.

“How could he ask me for a divorce on Monday and within 48 hours give a speech on family values and talk about how people treat people?” she said.

“Truthfully, my whole purpose is to get out there about who I am, so Newt couldn’t create me as an evil, awful person, which was starting to happen.”

It gets worse. Newt divorced Marianne months after she was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis, she says, and began dating her almost as scandalously.

Her relationship with Newt started before his divorce from his first wife, Jackie, was finalized. And he left Jackie while she was undergoing cancer treatment.

Political pundits call this "baggage." Can he overcome it? Newt, who is trying to sustain recent momentum, responded to this interview on Today, saying:

"I'm not going to say anything negative about Marianne."

"My two daughters, Kathy and Jackie, have sent a letter to the president of ABC News saying from a family perspective, they think this is totally wrong."

"They think that ABC should not air anything like this. And that intruding into family things that are more than a decade old are simply wrong."

"I think that my two daughters are very credible on my character, I think the people who have known me a long time are credible on my character."

"We have lots of folks willing to speak on this, I'm not going to."

The letter of which he speaks that his daughters wrote says, "The failure of a marriage is a terrible and emotional experience for everyone involved."

Newt "regrets any pain he may have caused in the past to people he loves," they say, echoing sentiments Newt has made on the campaign trail.

Gingrich often speaks of his mistakes, admitting he is imperfect. The question is now much baggage is too much for voters to potentially take.

He should get a modest boost from Rick Perry dropping out of the race today, and has another debate tonight to make his case in South Carolina.

I am ready to say FU to these companies. They were so nice when they came to town, and every time you called the office, very professional and knowlegable white people answered the phones - always. So I signed up for their service. Now that they have settled in here, it is obvious that the talent they once had has moved on. I won't put up with bad service in any capacity. I dropped my service. And the sista who took the call could care less. Bitch can't even put together the fact that she has a job due to the fact the company has customers - like me! Ass.

@JDeets-Tell me about it. All they want is your money. I wish people would stand up and speak up more. We have the same problem here. I have Comcast- They went Digital last year. They popped up one day and say you have to have a Box Adapter the next week. Freakin 300 people standing outside 1.5 hours before the Doors opened. When it opened- Woman walks outside and says they have 24 Boxes. Next Truck expected tomorrow. These Corporations handcuff you. The 1st thing they do is eliminate/buyout competition. Then they treat you like they want to.

Reed the situation is worse. Many large companies hire based on the area's demographic. I live in a major metropolitan city and you would die if you called our cable company. All calls get directed to a central call center where anyone from Moesha, Tenisha, or Delisha will answer. You won't be able to understand their eubonics, and if you say the wrong thing to them, such as "can you please repeat yourself, I cannot understand you", they will hang up on you! No joke! And if you ask for a manager, they just say no. It is crazy. You would think they own the company. They are so empowered they feel they can act however crazy they want to act with no repercussions. I dropped cable and went with a small company for my services - said F-U to the large company...hopefully more people will do the same and when their stock falls, they will realize they need to do something about these out of control sistas.

Yes-I agree. I also have "Job Related" Health Care. Many Doctors won't deal with Medicare. The "Have Nots" are the Majority. Some people hear the word "FREE" and they line up. Me? I know there's a catch I just have to find it. it's hard to get people to understand how important it is to live like they have a Future. When millions tune in to watch the Kardashians you know there is a problem. My prediction-If Obama wins- Middle income folks will Squat and sit on their money for 4 more years. Small towns will Dry up in a big way. Restaurants will close. Many will be out of work and we will just sit and watch them fall. People overestimate what Government can do for them and they underestimate the Crippling effect of the lack of Volunteer organization. America was built by Volunteers. People will pay a heavy Price if he gets in. I'm in a position where I can wait. I lived like there was a Future. Many will suffer. Then we will start over.

It is a proven fact that people do not appreciate something that is just given to them, that they didn't have to work for. I respect my health care providers because I know I am lucky to have such good providers. I talk to my doctors and they tell me the Medicaid patients are a nightmare, like they feel they can act however they want. Obama's health care will ruin this country. A total waste. I agree with you that we need more jobs, so that people can afford to buy their own healthcare, and their paychecks will help add more tax revenue.

Yes-Romney is to Robotic-almost on the verge of not being approachable. One of the biggest problem is this has been a short cycle-meaning it was just 3 years ago when people were sick of Bush! It's like-We know Obama is screwing us BUT-Your Guys screwed us before he got here. It's possible that it takes longer than 4 years to get all the grudges out of their system. To me this is not about loving Obama- its about Hating Republicans. Romney does needs to Polish his Skills. All they have come at him with so far is Lame Duck Crap. My guess is this will be the last go around for all of them. Yes-Christi-Rand Paul and many other up. & coming guys. It will be hard to attack Romney. America doesnt need Health care-We need Jobs.

I like Romney too. They keep playing up the Mormon thing but don't think that's a big deal. His views on issues like gay rights and abortion could hurt him. He needs to work on his charisma as that is one thing people focus on when they think of Obama. Obama can talk a good game…Republicans need to show that he is all talk, no action, and back it up with facts that matter to people, such as the lack of jobs and the bad economy. I like Ron Paul, too, but, to blacks, he comes across as an old white guy, regardless of how outstanding his views on issues are.

@Skip-Good Question-Where is Colon. It's interesting watching all these Republicans. All 4 on stage are bringing something to the Table. I'm from Ron Paul's neck of the woods. All 4 need each other-Hopefully soon they will realize this. I'm watching Newt right now-for the 1st time brag on the others. If those four come together and focus on Obama then they will win. It's all about Jobs. This Race Card issue is a Diversion- keeps your mind off the real Problems. Me? I gotta go with Romney. He has not Dirt and Americans are tired of Dirt! What's your take on all this?

You know what Reed, it not all about who should be in office. It is about being respectful to other people of all race. No it is not always true about black people call out the race card everytime one of them get in trouble. And i am not a fuck up person, you are. So why i think you fuck up? Is because you and other's feels the need to turn people against their own race and so that you have your freedom to slave people. Ok it's kool that you are a die hard republican fan, but don't be hateful. I do believe that there are people in this country taking avenge of our system and that is wrong. So call me stupid and a fool, but i do have sense.

Reed do you think we have a good Republican candidate yet? The NJ governor seemed good but he won't run. Herman Cain seemed good, but has too much personal baggage. Not sure the other candidates can win. Where's Colin Powell?!
