Cynthia Nixon Labels Her Homosexuality a "Choice"

Cynthia Nixon finds herself in a bit of trouble within the gay community.

The actress - best known for her role as Miranda on Sex and the City, and in a committed relationship with Christine Marinoni - is profiled this week in The New York Times and tells the newspaper:

“I gave a speech recently, an empowerment speech to a gay audience, and it included the line ‘I’ve been straight and I’ve been gay, and gay is better.’ And they tried to get me to change it, because they said it implies that homosexuality can be a choice. And for me, it is a choice."

Cynthia Nixon has shaved her head for a role in a Broadway play. But that's not why the actress is making headlines.

Nixon made these comments around the same time Washington became the seventh state to legalize gay marriage, and she doesn't see her viewpoint as contrasting with the stance of many activists.

“A certain section of our community is very concerned that it not be seen as a choice, because if it’s a choice, then we could opt out," the actress says. "I say it doesn’t matter if we flew here or we swam here, it matters that we are here and we are one group and let us stop trying to make a litmus test for who is considered gay and who is not.

"I am very annoyed about this issue. Why can’t it be a choice? Why is that any less legitimate? It seems we’re just ceding this point to bigots who are demanding it, and I don’t think that they should define the terms of the debate."

What do you think of Nixon's comments?

I think for some homosexuality can be a choice but those people are a minority within a minority. Most homosexuals I know wouldn't agree with what Cynthia says. Then again, I find women are sometimes more vague about their sexuality than men.

i am torn on this subject. I don't have a problem with homesexuals per se but I dont agreed with their lifestyle either. this is because it doesn't go with my religious beliefs. Another thing that doesn't mesh with my beliefs is judging others. i think that if we live our lives loving our neighbor like ourselves everything else would work out. by the way I am Jewish and follow the Kosher laws set out in Leviticus which I think is so strange that everyone keeps bringing them up here. god bless all of you. i am glad God will judge all of us because I know I am not qualified.

She is the first homosexual that I know of who had the courage and the grace to admit that homosexuality is a choice. And for that, I commend her for her honesty!! And I honestly respect and accept how she chooses to live her life, in spite of the fact that I do not agree with how she chooses to live her life. And I suppose her right to live that way. Most homosexuals are trying to brainwash the rest of the world into believing that people are born that way, which is total denial!

I am shocked at the ignorance I am reading here. A person's sexuality is part of how they are made and two consenting adults who love each other, whether gay, straight, or bi is never wrong. Openly choosing prejudice in the name of a religion is what is wrong, not love. I hope the bible thumpers realize that The Bible has been re-written countless times since its original Aramaec form, (which was also written by man.) so it is a different text from 2000 years ago. Each version has each writers opinion, not God's. And also, to those "holy rollers" here who bash gays, where is the Judge not, lest ye be judged? Also, if you are THAT into religion, then I hope you are not eating shrimp, or wearing mixed fiber fabrics, or adding cheese to your burger, because those are sins as well.

PT2 Being gay is no more a sin than being Black or being a republican. PLEASE educate yourself about my God before you start speaking on His behalf. Yes, I am gay and a christian. It's not an oxymoron or a double negative. It's just how He made me. How dare you compare homosexuality to murderers or any other criminal activity. Stop using the Bible as an excuse to subjugate, separate, control, injure or kill. Wait! That sounds just like slavery! If you think homosexuality is wrong, be woman or man enough to say that it's your opinion just like Cynthia Nixon is entitled to hers...whether we agree or not.

Wooooow! How did we get so lucky that all the idiots live in America where each and every citizen has the same rights, that is, until people start voicing opinions about how God sees things. For those of you who think you are intelligent enough to claim to know the Bible...are you aware that the word homosexuality did not exist when the Bible was originally written. Are you also aware that when the original Bible was written, there was no such word as abomination. I bet you also didn't know that in that same scripture that everyone wants to quote (homosexuality is an abomination), it says that eating shellfish is also an abomination. Crabs legs anyone? How about some shrimp?

Wow how original to quote the bible, like every homosexual hasn't heard it before. Perhaps you burn crosses in "colored peoples" yards as well. The skewed view points about others can be passed down from generation to generation. We aren't all equal, unless we are WASP.

@Telly: The only problem with the examples you give is that lying, stealing, and killing harm others whereas being homosexual doesn't.

blaize is the only person here who makes any sence! we all live the way we live. if "god" wanted us to live the way the bible says we have to then he wouldnt have created this little thing called FREE WILL

1. Of course we have to judge especially of Nature's law of making a baby requires a penis with real sperms and a real vagina with eggs and baby-making system if you leave out all the artificial ways we humans can make babies now.
2. Of course gays can go to heaven if they work hard to accept that they were born and then chose to express their love in the same-sex equation that can never produce babies. Gays can learn to be happy that they are out of the closet, love straights people who hate them for fear of going against Nature's law to make children, volunteer, not sexually molested straight people because it's more vile when a straight boy gets sexually molested by a Man or a straight girl gets sexually molested by a lesbian, go to college, save money, donate. Do all of these while being gay and gays will go to heaven for their effort to work
hard in being good loving gay humans.
