Ali Fedotowsky and Roberto Martinez: Behind the Split

After meeting fiance Roberto Martinez on The Bachelorette, then experiencing an epic courtship, Ali Fedotowsky said she was ready to marry him, and quickly.

Fast forward a year and a half, and it's over.

The pair had a nice run by Bachelorette standards (18 months qualifies as a long-term relationship by any measure), but she broke up with Roberto last week.

Now, in People's new cover story, Ali explains why.

"I wouldn't be being truthful if I said this came out of nowhere," a tearful Fedotowsky said, reflecting on the rocky times she and Roberto endured of late.

"We definitely were having problems. But I always believed we could work it out."

Despite putting the brakes on their fast-tracked wedding plans last year, and then twice more postponing plans to walk down the aisle with Roberto, Ali says they did make a concerted effort to stay together and to weather the tough times.

In spite of that, their arguments continued, and worsened at that.

"We both realized we were unhappy more than we were happy," says Ali, in a candid take of a romance born on a show so often phony. "And we both deserved more"

    Let's face it. The majority of the contestants on the Bachelor/Bachelorette are after a career in TV, not Romance. If you look hard you can see the same people on other TV shows. I saw Samantha Levy on the Jerry Springer "Baggage" show where she likes to post nude pictures of her Ex's on the internet. I have almost stopped watching the show. It is too much like "Survivor" where they are recycling all their old cast members. I think the Bacheloer Pad is more reality, where all they want to do is "hook up" and make money.

    I ENJOYED THE BEST BACHELORETTE EVER AND WAS SO DISAPPOINTED AFTER THE SPLIT. IF ONE LOVES SOMEONE SO MUCH, LOVER CONQUERS EVERTHING AND YOU WORK AT IT UNTIL YOU CAN AGREE. TRUE LOVE IS A LOT MORE THAN HOPPING IN AND OUR OF RELATIONSHIPS. THERE IS NO ONE ON THIS EARTH THATS RELATIONSHIP IS PERFECT. IT IS ABOUT ACCEPTING ONES PARTNERS, UNDERSTASNDING THEY ARE DIFFERENT AND COMPROMISING AND WORKING HARD AT IT. I DO BELIEVE THIS WAS TRUE LOVE CHRIS BUT THEY GAVE UP AND IT WOULD NEVER HAVE WORKED WITH CHRIS THE RUNNER UP EITHER. IF YOU LOVE A MAN ENOUGH YOU WILL DO EVERYTHING IN YOUR PWER TO PLEASE HIM AND VISA VERSA. BEEN MARRIED 40+ YEARS AND KNOW WHAT I AM SAYING IT HAS NOT BEEN AN EASY JOURNEY FOR US EITHER.

    Ali and Roberto please work things out to shame the haters out there.You fit each other very well.There is no relationship that is easy,there are ups and downs and as human-beings we can overcome them if we try.Love you both.I pray for Ashley and JP too. Mercia (grand rapids,michigan)
