Shakira Named to Presidential Education Advisory Council
Shakira and the Obama Administration have announced that she will be a member of the President's Advisory Commission on Educational Excellence for Hispanics.
Seriously. The White House said in a statement:
“I am grateful that these impressive individuals have chosen to dedicate their talents to serving the American people at this important time for our country ... I look forward to working with them in the months and years ahead.”
More than a wildly successful singer and celebrity news staple (Shakira and Gerard Pique have reportedly called things off), her list of accomplishments include:
- Founding the Barefoot Foundation in 1995, which operates schools & educational projects for over 6,000 children in Colombia, South Africa, and Haiti.
- Collaborating with the World Bank and the Barefoot Foundation to craft initiatives to distribute Latin American educational and developmental programs.
- Becoming a founding member of Latin America in Solidarity Action, a coalition of artists and business leaders seeking to promote early childhood policies.
- Serving as Honorary Chair of Global Campaign for Education Global Action Week.
- Serving as U.N. Goodwill Ambassador for the Children's Emergency Fund

I am always amazed how people jump to conclusions without knowing the facts. This is true of most blogs and life in general. First, I attended the swearing-in ceremony. Shakira is one of approximately 30 other advisors. We were there to support our friend who is an esteemed member of the University System and also a member of this advisory board. Shakira isn't simply a name...she attended the conference and made well thought out comments in public discussions with other members during the 2-day conference. She is in this country to help underpriveleged members of our society better themselves, and thus, better OUR country. I suspect that some of these bloggers cannot comprehend going to another country to help citizens of that country...for NO PAY. I also suspect that some bloggers are not inteligent enough to know that Shakira didn't show up in a leather outfit, but in professional clothing with little to no make-up. Remember, she works as an singer/dancer/entertainer but she

This is a great first step if Obama is trying to find a way out of the Office of President.

The "President's Advisory Commission on Educational Excellence for Hispanics?!?" WTF exactly is that? BO thinks that only spics should get good educations? No, it's more pandering to the heaviest breeding people in this country. BO knows his days are numbered so he's courting his most ardent supporters at the expense of YT. Eff Obama and this twat.

Does it matter if she is an American Citizen, Resident, or has a Visa to work in the United States? What have you done to help our education system? You've done nothing but point fingers and bitch. She was appointed for the position because she knows about education and is doing something about it. Shakira said, "I'm a very inpatient person. I don't like to waste my time or money and I know everyone feels the same way. And believe me, there is no waste when it comes to education."

First of all, it's more of a responsibility than an honor or a title bestowed. Second, obviously the intent is to get people's attention on the issue of early childhood education and development. Had a qualified, effective hispanic U.S. citizen been appointed none of you would even be be slightly enticed into a conversation related to education. Don't hate, do something positive with your energy and voice.

@dumb move: true, why not everyday citizens/people. I don't even have the money that she has and yet I cofounded a charity for needy kids. It is about money, I think in order to get a better idea the president needs to get with the everyday people.
