RAINN Calls Out Johnny Depp for Rape Comment

by at . Comments

He may get away with saying almost anything as Captain Jack Sparrow, but Johnny Depp is at the center of a controversy due to remarks he makes in the latest issue of Vanity Fair.

In an interview with the magazine, the actor expresses his disdain for photo shoots by comparing them to rape, actually reiterating that word for emphasis.

In response, RAINN (Rape, Abuse & Incest National Network) has issued the statement:

"While photos may feel at times intrusive, being photographed in no way compares to rape - a violent crime which affects another American every 2 minutes. RAINN welcomes the opportunity to speak with Mr. Depp and educate him about the real life experiences faced by survivors every day, and ways that he can work with RAINN to help."

Do you think Depp should apologize for his word choice?

What happened to freedom of speech? Theres always some group that has something to say about something.

This is ridiculous. Is any comparison safe? people need to stop being oversensitive. ya'll need to wait til someone is actually being offensive like mel gibson. it's not like he said that the producers work him like a n*gger or that he gets jewed with his paycheck. both are popular expressions by the way. these activist groups make a big deal out of everything to get in the spotlight.

P.S. And to say u can't compare to anything is obtuse, a lot of people compare a break in as aform of rape cuz its violates there space and even if he said the photoshoot is like being raped,I'm sure the flipped it around to make it sound huge

Here we go again, some one gives their opion and the world wants to hang them...Sexual rape and news media rape r diferent don't you think ?...The term as in many American words can mean different things to different people...His right to say what he feels is no worse than our right to comment on it.......

I think Mr.Depp is saying it right.Look at the way shoots are done, then look at how many pervs are out there, that are raping ppl

C'mon! So if he was talkin about his next movie and he said. "Wow these hours we're work are really hard and it feels like there working me to death" should everyone that's had someone die hate him and have huge backlash of the press?!?!?! STOP! Over analyzing everything people say! Damn he's human and probably givin 10,000 interviews where nobody had a problem and he says one wrong thing and people crucify him because of one answer,I feel bad for any victim of any violent crime but attacking someone because they used the word rape is kinda messed up and u know hew didn't mean it literally, some people just love to knick pick and cause drama and get attention for themselves and this is a clear cut case of it

This is ridiculous and part of the reason why the world is the way it is today. Get a grip, it was just an expression! No matter what anyone says, there will always be someone that doesn't like it, get over it!!! I feel, if you don't like what someone says...don't listen. Worry more about the important things in life, don't sweat the small stuff...enough said!

@Kathy: Freedom of speech does not mean people can say whatever they want without repercussions. This is a common, dangerous misconception.
The only thing the first amendment guarantees is that one cannot be jailed for one's views. That's it.

@Angela Willhite-Mcintosh: Depp is talking about voluntary magazine PHOTO SHOOTS, not the paparazzi.

I think its such a waste of time for ppl to spend so much time analyzing what someone says just because they're famous. If he wasn't famous would they make such a big deal out of it??? I say freedom of speech its just an expression and if to him getting unwanted photos taking of him at every moment even when there is a need for privacy (which everyone should be entitled to at times no matter who you are) feels like rape then so be it. Ppl are taking this to far!!
