Dr. Keith Ablow to Parents: Don't Applaud For Chaz Bono!

by at . Comments

Lacey Schwimmer is on his side. So is Elisabetta Canalis.

But there's at least one person who would vote Chaz Bono off Dancing with the Stars right now if he could: Dr. Keith Ablow.

Laughing Chaz

Not everyone finds Chaz Bono's appearance on Dancing with the Stars to be funny.

Referring to Bono's presence on the show as "toxic," the psychiatrist has written an editorial for Fox News which reads:

I advise parents to not allow their children to watch the episodes in which Chaz appears.

The last thing vulnerable children and adolescents need, as they wrestle with the normal process of establishing their identities, is to watch a captive crowd in a studio audience applaud on cue for someone whose search for an identity culminated with the removal of her breasts, the injection of steroids and, perhaps one day soon, the fashioning of a make-shift phallus to replace her vagina.

Chaz Bono should not be applauded for asserting she is a man (and goes about trying to look like one) any more than a woman who believes she will be happier without arms, has them removed and then continues to assert that she was right all along—her self-concept was that of a double amputee. Now, all is well.

Chaz Bono should not be applauded any more than someone who, tragically, believes that his species, rather than gender, is what is amiss and asks a plastic surgeon to build him a tail of flesh harvested from his abdomen. If only a plastic surgeon would acquiesce, all would be well.

In the end, Dr. Ablow believes Chaz should be "empathized with" and treated with "dignity," just not applauded. It's a stance that is sure to create controversy. Where do you stand on it?

I would like to learn more about that tail thing

Kat, I have always found that rhetorical move you just made to be pretty weak, frankly. What you're doing is taking the well-founded harsh criticism leveled at the doctor and accusing it of being on the same level of intolerance as the doctor's view. Not so, not by a long shot. As for reasons why he is wrong:
1. He fails to understand the essential nature of transgender individuals. They identify as the opposite gender of what their bodies are and this is NOT the result of conditioning. Thus, he fails on that count.
2. He fails for assuming that the mere presence of a trans individual means that ABC promotes everything that the trans person stands for, or at least that the trans person's presence is such that any kid seeing it would be forced to contend with the issue. Not so.
You want more argument? I've got more? DO you?

You go do it Mr. I am a straight male and I am 100% behind you Chaz. Be strong and dance your butt off and know that the Rampworm is cheering you on.

Are you out of your fuckin mind? The only reason a kid's thoughts would ever turn to whether this dude has a wang or a vagoo is because you're over here talkin about it you fuckin quack. To any "kid" who wouldn't understand what's going on, Chaz Bono just looks like a fat dude. Get a fuckin grip... What the hell do you think Jesus would feel about an asshole like you if he were around?

Keep up the good work, and good luck to all the dancers on the coming season of Dancing With the Stars! http://bit.ly/qGdw7G

Team me

Am I the only one who doesn't get what the big deal is?

Well said doctor.

It's laughable how everyone who thinks Dr. Keith Ablow is being too judgmental are themselves leveling ad hominem attacks against the doctor. Talk about hypocrisy. At least Dr. Ablow shows compassion. Instead of attempting to distract from the issue by attacking the doctor, you would make a better case for your point of view by listing some serious and credible reasons why he is wrong.

How can this "psycologist" be taken seriously. Aren't they supposed to have sort of professional code of conduct, where they are not supposed to be judgemental? And what kind of person who is born with a name like
" A BLOW "
actually keeps it once they turn the age of majority.
He should add on "JOB" to the end of it.
And get into THAT profession - sounds like amedia wh@re more than anything else.
Where is the professional organization who keeps shrinks in check?
Looks like one nut fell out of the basket.

chaz is a freak
