Michele Bachmann Quotes: John Wayne Gacy and Other Unforgettable Moments
Announcing her bid for the presidency Monday, Michele Bachmann noted that she shares her birthplace of Waterloo, Iowa, with acting legend John Wayne.
"Just like John Wayne is from Waterloo, Iowa, that's the kind of spirit I have too. It's embracing America. It's sacrificing for America," Bachmann said.
The problem? The Duke is from Winterset, Iowa, about 150 miles away. John Wayne Gacy, the notorious rapist and serial killer, hails from Waterloo.
Michele Bachmann on John Wayne
While an honest mistake, and no big deal in the grand scheme, such gaffes and other ridiculous Michele Bachmann quotes pop up with surprising frequency.
As Bachmann, who now represents a Minnesota district in the U.S. House, gears up for her presidential run, we pulled together a greatest hits list.
Much like Sarah Palin's greatest hits, some of these Bachmann lines seem straight out of The Onion, classic "did this really happen?" moments ...
- "And what a bizarre time we're in, when a judge will say to little children that you can't say the pledge of allegiance, but you must learn that homosexuality is normal and you should try it."
- "(Gay marriage) is probably the biggest issue that will impact our state and our nation in the last, at least, thirty years. I am not understating that."
- “During the last 100 days we have seen an orgy. It would make any local smorgasbord embarrassed … The government spent its wad by April 26.”
- "The President of the United States will be taking a trip over to India that is expected to cost the taxpayers $200 million a day."
- "But we also know that the very founders that wrote those documents worked tirelessly until slavery was no more in the United States." (On the Constitution, drafted close to a century before slavery was abolished)
- "It is horrific to know that in the African American community, 50 percent of all African American pregnancies in the United States end in abortion, 50 percent. That is a genocide of African Americans of the United States. It should not be."
- "Carbon dioxide is portrayed as harmful. But there isn't even one study that can be produced that shows that carbon dioxide is a harmful gas."
- "You're the state where the shot was heard around the world in Lexington and Concord." Sadly, the first shots of the Revolutionary War were fired in Massachusetts, not the Granite State, where she was speaking.
- Bachmann criticized the USA's current tax code as "a weapon of mass destruction" in a speech delivered to South Carolina Republican activists.
- Bachmann derided Planned Parenthood as "the LensCrafters of big abortion."
- She referred to the administration as a "gangster government," and said "I think there have been actions taken by the government that are corrupt."
Michelle Bachmann on Intelligent Design
- In 2006, Bachmann said, "There are hundreds and hundreds of scientists, many of them holding Nobel Prizes, who believe in intelligent design."
- Bachmann suggested that proposed financial regulatory reform was reminiscent of Italy under the rule of fascist dictator Benito Mussolini.
- "Hey, I took karate when I was 17 years old, I am dangerous." (on whether she could "take" President Obama)
- Bachmann issued a warning in March of 2009 on her fear that the USA might wind up abandoning "the dollar for a multinational currency."
- "I want people in Minnesota armed and dangerous on this issue of the energy tax because we need to fight back."
- "Not all cultures are equal."
- "Why does the government need our phone numbers? You know the question that's not on this survey? Are you a U.S. citizen? This would be your perfect opportunity to find out how many illegal aliens are in the United States." (on the U.S. Census)
- After receiving a lei at the airport in Hawaii, she wore it while addressing Congress, saying "I'm reminded that the one who created this lei also created our freedom. Are we so insensible to the high cost our forebearers paid to purchase our freedom?" So ... the Hawaiian Bureau of Tourism created freedom.
- "If we look at the collection of friends that Barack Obama has had in his life, it calls into question what Barack Obama's true beliefs and values and thoughts are. His attitudes, values, and beliefs of the United States... is negative."
- In July of last year, Bachmann accused the Obama administration of "turning our country into a nation of slaves."
- Bachmann expressed concern that White House was trying to put in place "re-education camps for young people, where young people have to go and get trained in a philosophy that the government puts forward."
- "[Nancy Pelosi] is committed to her global warming fanaticism to the point where she has said she has even said she is trying to save the planet. We all know that someone did that 2,000 years ago."
- "A woman (Terri Schiavo) was healthy. There was brain damage, there was no question. But from a health point of view, she was not terminally ill."

I guess I don't see the problem with many of these quotes. It would be helpful if the author would be specific about her disagreement with each of them. it seems to me that a lot of these statements represent the views of mainstream America. Perhaps the author should get out of her Hollywood bubble occasionally.

Her problem is not verbal gaffes, that happens to everybody. Her "crime" is being a conservative female. Th PC crowd just hates black or female Republicans and will go to great lengths to discredit them. I read list "gaffes" presented here and found myself cheering Michelle on!

This woman needs a 'mouth minder'. Someone to smack her upside the head when she says something untrue. But then we risk her being beaten senseless every time she opens her mouth.

from the article: "John Wayne Gacy, the notorious rapist and serial killer, hails from Waterloo."
this statement is a lie. Gacy was born and raised in Chicago where he committed all of his murders. he did live in Waterloo for 2 years , 1966-1968. Hardly long enough to say he "hails from Waterloo"
He left the town when he was convicted of sexual assault in 1968 and never returned. After prison he returned to his home inn chicago where he became deeply involved in Democratic politics among other things. Check your facts before jumping to conclusions

@fanny: You got it kinda right. Yes, one will have to buy the public option health insurance. And that insurance will nt be allowed to turn you down as other companys do if you have a medical condition. We all "buy" insurance here, usually through our employers already so if you already have it nothing will change. People who don't will be able to get it throgh a public plan they pay for just like I pay for mine.
But there will not, I repeat NOT be any panels or government deciding your healthcare. It's a scare tactic being used by one political party who is opposed to a public option in an effort to rile people up out of fear. It seems to be working as people believe there will be death panels deciding when granny should die. But it's not true. The whole darn issue is way more complex than all this. I am lucky I have good medical insurance. I pay alot for it but I am glad to have it. So many here in the US have none sometimes simply because born with a medcal condition. This must

@ freespirit114, You're 100% correct. I can't possibly imagine being turned down for any kind of treatment or being told which doctor I can go to... that's ludicris! (not being sarcastic there) If I got sick tomorrow, I could waltz into any hospital and know that I would receive the proper treatment regardless of my income or age. It should be the same there too. The peace of mind that comes along with it is priceless.
So if I understand correctly the "free health care" program being proposed must actually be purchased first and even then there is a pannel of medical professionals who determing what treatment you can receive and what doctors you can see? What the hell! That's bulls**t! I can see why you don't want it! It's not what we have at all!!!! Good luck though I hope you get REAL free health care.

All this talk about medical panels......my insurance already dictates my treatments and medication to my doctor. So I don't understand why everybody gets so pissed about it. Private insurance already does all the terrible things any government plan will do.

@freespirit114- nope, no hating here! The whole american health plan is terrible. Like we just barely got a cheap plan from my husbands work cuz its the only thing we can afford. We made just enough to not qualify for medicaid but not enough to get decent insurance. It sux...

@fanny: The thing about no cancer treatment after 70 or about a panel of doctors deciding if you get care is not true. It is a scare tactic being used by one political party. The healthcare reform we are talking about here is not even close to the universal healthcare you enjoy in Canada. It will allow people here who are otherwise turned down for helth insurance because they are already sick to purchase it. The public option (which is the whole point of it ) will allow anyone to buy health insurance even if their employer does not offer it and even if they have a pre existing condition. Here in the US unless you have a ton of money there are some types of life saving medical treatments that you can't get even if you have insurance. There are people who die long before their insurance company decides maybe to pay for a part of their treatment. You live in Canada, can you even fathom being told that you can't get lifesaving care or that you have to wait for approval for that care an
