THG Asks!

Welcome to THG's new feature, in which two of our celebrity gossip experts debate topical issues in the entertainment world and you decide who wrote the winning argument!

Today, THG Asks: Did Scotty McCreery deserve to win American Idol?

YES by Free Britney

Two words: 122 million. That's the number of people who crowned the newest American Idol this week.

Not exactly a small sample size. We could keep playing the numbers game - how many songs, how many aspirants he bested - but you get the idea.

Some will say Pia Toscano was ousted too soon, and she probably was. Ditto James Durbin. But can anyone really dispute Scotty McCreery's worthiness?

Many of this year's eliminations were controversial, but only relative to some of the contestants who outlasted them - not to Scotty specifically.

He's got an outstanding voice perfectly suited for country, and he proved it time and again. What he lacks in flair, he makes up for with talent.

Slow, smooth and steady won this race, and deservedly so.

The Idol Winner is ...

NO by Hilton Hater

Scotty McCreery is a fantastic singer. If I were going purely by voice, he'd have earned my vote as American Idol champion after his first audition.

But forget what the judges say: This is not purely a singing competition.

There are, and there should be, other factors at work. The legitimacy of Idol itself is at stake, especially with new competition such as The Voice and The X-Factor.

It really needs to crank out a successful winner, and Lauren Alaina stands a better chance at sustained success than Scotty does.

For whatever reason, male victors simply don't do well on the charts. Kris Allen? David Cook? Lee DeWyze? Can anyone name a top 10 single by any of them?

As evidenced by her duet with Carrie Underwood, Alaina has a long way to go. But she's tough. She overcame a sprained throat to compete in the finals.

She clearly wants this and I have no doubt she has more potential to be the next Carrie than Scotty has to be more than a one-month wonder.

THG Asks you ... did Scotty deserve to win?

The TOP 3 downloaded songs from this season of American Idol on ITunes are: The House of the Rising Sun, What is and What Should Never Be and Bennie & the Jets ALL recorded by Haley Reinhart. Just like Daughtry expect to see the biggest career out of Scotty, Lauren and Haley to be Haley.

and by the way did you vote for your IDOLS??????? that's why it's called IDOL!!!!!!! you vote for your choice... it's just fortunate that scotty have a lot of people who believes in him, that's why he won.... hayayayayayayayayay... simple analysis.

hello, everyone... common sense dictates that the reason why scotty won is because of people's choice... why do you have to say he didn't deserve it??????? THINK guys... where's your brain?

haley & james were the best all-around!!!!!!

I tink that james was the better singer and intertainer all around some times the winners are choose because of their good looks not their talent i think the judges should have more say in who wins and you should only be allowed to vote once

The overall talent on this year's AI was very, very good. Much better than the past several years. That said,it was unfortunate that the two finalists were not the two best competitors...good singers, yes...but bland, safe, and uninspiring picks. Pretty much waht you would expect middle America (who makes up the bulk of the audience)to vote for. The were both good..but ask yourself: Did either Scotty or Lauren have anything that really, truly made them exceptional? Neither had any stage presence or charisma. Again, nice voices, but sorta...shrugs...

Out of the 2 left standing? Scotty was the better singer with a great personality. Were either of them my personal choice? NO WAY. I wanted James Durbin who was, by far, the better singer AND performer. I still don't understand what happened with the voting and if the judges had any power, he would have not gone when he did. Idol NEEDS to change the voting style and include input from the people they call judges, who are really just commentators. Idol is the only show where the judges have no power at all. It should be a combined system, part call in vote and part judges vote like DWTS, that would be fair.

Avatar

no, he didn't deserve it.. the judges keep saying "it's about the show, not just the voice"... NO ONE had the showmanship of James... and, for the record, there wasn't 122 million people that chose him.. 122 million votes, yes. 122 million voters, no... with 10 votes per email address and cell number, i highly doubt it was near that many voters

James, Casey,Paul or Haley would have made a better idol than either of the two finalists. Through with American idol.
