Sarah Lane Accuses Natalie Portman, Black Swan of Body Double "Cover Up"

Natalie Portman won an Oscar for role in Black Swan, but now the star's body double is claiming the actress was featured in the film far less than has been advertised.

Speaking to Entertainment Weekly, Sarah Lane -  an American Ballet Theatre soloist who perfected many of the movie's complicated dance sequences - said: “Of the full body shots, I would say 5 percent are Natalie. All the other shots are me.”

Lane spoke out in response to comments a couple days earlier by Portman's fiance, choreographer Benjamin Millepied. He told the L.A. Times that "85 percent of that movie is Natalie.”

However, Lane says that only applies to shots which are "just her face with arms... that doesn’t show the actual dancing.”

Saying she's the victim of a "cover up," Lane adds that Black Swan producer Ari Handel told her to remain quiet about these facts, yet she's going on record now because "it is demeaning to the profession... I’ve been doing this for 22 years... Can you become a concert pianist in a year and a half, even if you’re a movie star?”

UPDATE: The filmmakers have released a statement that reads:

“We were fortunate to have Sarah there to cover the more complicated dance sequences and we have nothing but praise for the hard work she did. However, Natalie herself did most of the dancing featured in the final film.”

Ok people with no knowledge of dance....it is physically IMPOSSIBLE for an adult woman to train in ballet to this extent of ability in 1 1/2 yrs.IMPOSSIBLE.There is years and years of extensive strength building involved that must begin in early childhood to gain this sort of fluidity and grace and strength in ballet.Arm positions and simple pirouettes and the warm up stretches are all about what Ms. Portman did in this movie. There is NO way possible she could have trained to dance en pointe in one year and half. NO WAY. And no, I do not deny her acting ability and her deserving the award she's been given for acting in this movie. She is to be commended. However a big part of the movie was watching the beauty of the dance...which in all cases came strictly from the dance body double...I dont even know her name...and it really doesnt matter..all I know is she dances like an angel and deserves recgnition of some type.

Sarah Lane - you are right ! I'm standing by your side. You are talented and you have grace. Portman is envious about your great contribution in the film that is why she didnt't mention you in her speech and that is why she want you to be unknown. But Sarah you are Prima Ballerina - you are star ! If Portman didn't lie about her performance and if she gave you respect for your work it would be ok. But the real think is that Portman wants everything - no ethic, no morality and no honour ! That is a great shame for Portman.

Money could probably shut her up. Maybe they didn't pay her enough.

Her problem is not with getting credit or being thanked, her problem is that Natalie's baby daddy is publicly saying most of the dancing was Natalie. As a dancer myself, I don't blame her for taking offense at that.

I finally saw this film today mainly because of this being in the news. I wanted to see it regardless but this just spurred me on to the theater. Much darker than I originally thought it would be. Great film! Natalie Portman has come a long way from her days as a child actress in The Professional.

I guess she doesn't understand the purpose of a body double. It's like a stunt man. Poor thing. She's not apt to get that many more roles with this kind in ingratitude.

All of this would have been mute if Natalie had just said two words Thank You to the real dancer. It was rude of her not to thank her even if you believe the bullshit that she only did 15% of the dancing.

I haven't see the movie yet, but I'm sure Natalie acts in the film. I doubt it's two hours of just her dancing. Plus, Sarah is a ballerina body double; that's her JOB. Body doubles don't usually get a lot of credit.
