Sarah Lane Accuses Natalie Portman, Black Swan of Body Double "Cover Up"

by at . Comments

Natalie Portman won an Oscar for role in Black Swan, but now the star's body double is claiming the actress was featured in the film far less than has been advertised.

Speaking to Entertainment Weekly, Sarah Lane -  an American Ballet Theatre soloist who perfected many of the movie's complicated dance sequences - said: “Of the full body shots, I would say 5 percent are Natalie. All the other shots are me.”

Lane spoke out in response to comments a couple days earlier by Portman's fiance, choreographer Benjamin Millepied. He told the L.A. Times that "85 percent of that movie is Natalie.”

However, Lane says that only applies to shots which are "just her face with arms... that doesn’t show the actual dancing.”

Saying she's the victim of a "cover up," Lane adds that Black Swan producer Ari Handel told her to remain quiet about these facts, yet she's going on record now because "it is demeaning to the profession... I’ve been doing this for 22 years... Can you become a concert pianist in a year and a half, even if you’re a movie star?”

UPDATE: The filmmakers have released a statement that reads:

“We were fortunate to have Sarah there to cover the more complicated dance sequences and we have nothing but praise for the hard work she did. However, Natalie herself did most of the dancing featured in the final film.”

Having received training at one of the top ballet schools in the world, I am appalled that Ms Lane did not receive credit, where credit was due. She obviously did do the scenes that drew in the audience and I feel she should get the award, not Portman. I am proud of Ms Lane for speaking out.

I'm just wonder, if Opera - Diva would sing to the movie in background, they would treat her the same way, just saying in the end that she's just someone not worth to mention in the movie, or if Eric Clapton would play the guitar also in background ...
The Ballet is also a form of art. Everyone knows Natalie is really great actress but the thing is how they treated the dancer.

But what's the thing, Portman really worked hard with choreographer, The baby due is soon, right ? ;-)))

As someone who studied dance for 13 years I know the hard work and dedication it takes to be a ballerina. However, I believe Natalie did do the majority of the dancing in this movie. Natalie actually does have a background in dance and would be more than able to do the majority of the dancing with 1 1/2 years training. Sarah is probably a beautiful dancer, but she should stop these accusations. She was a body double for the more complicated moves and lifts.

Im sure Natalie has thanked her and the studio and director has too and producer.Im sure she was thanked alot. She was probably only contracted to to be paid a certain amount. This was a low budget film.Yhen it became popular mainly due to the critics review of portmans acting. ACTING!! I tell you. I read alot of the reviews and it was all about her acting .They were not glorifying her as a dancer. They mention ho hard she trained to portray some of what these dancers have to do.But This movie would not have been popular at all if it was not for Portman period. Now this dancer comes out after al the awards and says this BS. Money ploy nothing more. She should be the one thanking portman, studio, director, producer and cast for given her dancing proffesion a little attention.

Who cares!!! This is such BS. This dancer now comes out and says this. She is just looking for cash not recognition.Anybody who thinks otherwise is a typical moron. Oscars are given out for acting not dancing.

Sharah is soooo right! Anyone who has ever studied ballet or is marginally aware of the degree of difficulty that ballet routines demand knows that it takes years to master them. In no way could Natalie Portman have become even marginally proficent in one year of study no matter how many hours a day she worked. I too saw the movie and loved it but I was made very much aware each time Natalie was featured in a Ballet position on screen. The least Natalie could have done was give credit where credit is due to Sarah Lane. After all, it is a movie and the public knows that what we see on screen is always make believe. Shame on you Natalie! You are a consumae professional perfomer an should have acted with more integrity than this. kudos to you Sarah for speaking out!

I agree that Natalie Portman should have said "thank you" but to be honest, body doubles, just like stunt men, don't often get thanked. Sometimes, Oscar winners even forget to thank their spouses or family members when they're up there. For crying out loud, Natalie Portman won the Oscar for her acting, not the dancing. She portrayed a ballerina but it was her acting that won the award, just like when Reese won for playing June Carter Cash in Walk the Line. Please spare me Sarah Lane, don't try to get some attention by discrediting Natalie Portman. Have some class.

I just read the bio of the late Bob Fosse. He was a great dancer and choreographer. He was married for many years to another great dancer, Gwen Virdon. Reading that book, I got an appreciation of the difficulty of dance. Just to confirm, no, Natalie could not have done anything but the most basic moves. If you say she could, then I can play the movie part of an NFL football quarterback and learn, within a short time, to throw an accurate pass for 50 yards. Yea, right.

Should Natalie Portman deserve to have the Oscar? The story about her being in this movie sounded like "cheating" to me.
