Mike Huckabee Calls Out Natalie Portman for Premarital Pregnancy
Former Arkansas Governor Mike Huckabee has made it clear: he has an issue with unmarried, unashamed, wealthy women who tell the world about their pregnancy.
It's clear to whom he's referring, right? Incredibly, no.
The likely 2012 Presidential candidate went on Michael Medved's radio show Monday and somehow called out Natalie Portman, not a certain daughter of a certain reality star who has raked in seven figures by posing on tabloid covers with her child.
"People see a Natalie Portman who boasts*, 'We're not married but we're having these children and they're doing just fine," Huckabee said. "I think it gives a distorted image. It's unfortunate that we glorify and glamorize the idea of out-of-wedlock children."
(*Note: Portman has never said this. She has, however, had the gall to appear on stage with a baby bump and tell the world she loves her fiancee, Benjamin Millepied.)
Referring to Portman's pregnancy as "troubling," Huckabee added:
"Most single moms are very poor, uneducated, can't get a job, and if it weren't for government assistance, their kids would be starving to death and never have health care. And that's the story that we're not seeing."
We agree 1,000% with that statement. We wonder how Huckabee's fellow Republican, Sarah Palin, feels about this issue.
In 2007, meanwhile, Huckabee said the following about a pregnant Jamie Lynn Spears: "I hope it is not an encouragement to other 16-year-olds who think that is the best course of action... I'm not going to condemn her... There'll be plenty of people in line to and I always look for the shortest lines. I just hope that she will make another right decision, and that's to give that child all the love and kindness and care that she can."
Why the more pointed words for Portman? Might they be related to a Presidential run? You tell us.

Nowadays a marriage is nothing more than a pretty piece of paper. People get married and divorced just as easily as kids in the playground get together and breakup. So I don't think being an unwed mother is anymore stressful than being married. She and her fiance are commited to each other by love, and they plan on raising their child with love. That's all that should matter. She's not out drinking or doing drugs while pregnant, she didn't sleep around and get pregnant by accident, she knows who the father of the baby is and is happy to be carrying this child. I think that shows that she has morals and ethics so much more than standing up in front of a minister and repeating words that often amount to nothing.

@Glen: Just because a person has sex outside of marriage doesn't mean that they have no morals, despite what you repressive, backward, bible-thumping conservatives believe. A person has the right to determine when they're ready for sex- it's a personal choice. It's ridiculous that you think people actually owe the public an apology for having sex.

Leo - "Ms. Portland should be allowed a stress free pregnancy, instead of being called out at a time when she should be her happiest."
You think having a child without a marriage contract is stress-free?
Even if the other person SAYS they love you, they haven't displayed the ultimate sacrifice - a marriage, so it all could be smoke in the wind far as the unwed pregnant partner knows.
If that doesn't add stress, I don't know what does.

I agree it's far better for the children if the parents are married, and I can't understand why celebrities don't feel some embarrassment (shame) for doing it the other way around, but it's not my life, so...
In a news article, Angelina has said their children have literally begged them to marry, don't know if it's true or not.
But marrying one another is one good way to give your children "security" and life is difficult enough without insecurity being thrown in there. And the greatest love a father or mother can show their child is giving them security.
For the one who said Natalie has no reason to be ashamed, how about embarrassed then? How far has society gone when one can literally be caught with their pants down and not feel embarrassed. So much for class.

Usually better off if you're married before you're pregnant, but sometimes stuff happens...but at least she'll be married before the birth...I'm just thrilled Natalie's having a baby period. That child will be beautiful!!

Politicians just don't get it. I am all for hot topics, but this is a topic from Mike Huckabee that did Not Need to be put out there. Ms. Portland should be allowed a stress free pregnancy, instead of being called out at a time when she should be her happiest. Instead of finding a suggestion to boost the economy,or find encouraging words to the people who are struggling because of job losses,Mike Huckabee is looking into the very private life of a movie star and commenting on what he thinks is wrong with the world. The date will be October the 35th, before he gets a clue, that this is Not what we expect out of serious minded politicians.
P.S.
For clarification purposes:
We all know that there is such date as October the 35th!!

My gosh this debate is crazy! It's all Natalie Portman this and that. Hey people-men have birth control options too! I realize that women have more options in the area of birth control than men but the second women get pregnant people blame the woman and the woman alone for it. People here are bashing Natalie but not one person has said the guy she laid down with to get preggers is a bad role or whatever. Why is that? Because men can't have babies or show up on TV looking preggo so they are somehow not invoved? Oh please!! If you are going to bash a woman for it (and I DO NOT believe you should) should you not also blame the guy who made an out of wedlock baby? She (and every other woman on earth) did not make a baby alone, yet she is left alone when it comes to defending that choice. Women with out of wedlock babies are vilified, the men who made them are left alone. Nice. Real nice. It takes 2 to tango people. Either talk disapprovingly about both or shut the hell up! She did nothin

@Glen: Are you calling Tripp a mistake?!? I thought he was a blessing. Bristol can't have it both ways.
One more thing, as far as huckabee's point about most single mothers being unwed and uneducated: Bristol is getting a 2-year degree and is not with her baby daddy.
Portman is a Harvard graduate, is engaged to her baby daddy and hasn't once posed for a tabloid or appeared on a reality show.
