It's official: Joseph Gordon-Levitt has been confirmed for a key role in The Dark Knight Rises.
The Inception star will take on the character of Alberto Falcone in the summer 2012 blockbuster, the son of mafia boss Carmine Falcone, played by Tom Wilkinson in Batman Begins.
A source close to the film says the villain known as "The Holiday Killer" returns to Gotham "to take over the underworld once ruled by his father before the arrival of Batman."
Anne Hathway will play Catwoman in this installment of the franchise, while Juno Temple and Marion Cotillard will also appear. The Dark Knight Rises hits theaters on July 20, 2012.
UPDATE: Sources now say Gordon-Levitt is on board, but will NOT portray The Holiday Killer. We'll have more on this role as news breaks.
