Casey Abrams: Growling, Howling, Earning Standing Ovation

The concluding, standing ovation-inducing performance of Casey Abrams on American Idol last night almost never happened.

This semifinalist was holed up in a hospital late last week, teetering on the edge of disqualification when he came close to missing Friday's taping of the top 12 male performances.

But Casey rallied, and season 10 is clearly better off for it. The crooner delivered an unusual, sharp, entertaining rendition of "I Put a Spell on You," growing, hissing and howling throughout, before ending on a relaxed high note. Both literally and figuratively. It was the ideal exclamation on an evening that showcased a variety of skills and voices.
