Keith Olbermann: Fired By MSNBC!

by at . Comments

Keith Olbermann, one of the best known cable news personalities on either side of the political spectrum, was abruptly fired yesterday by MSNBC.

Olbermann, in the middle of a four-year $30 million deal set to last until 2012, announced on last night's edition of Countdown that it was his last.

The dismissal is said to be at least indirectly related to Comcast's acquiring of NBC and the parent company's distaste for his defiance and attitude.

Here's Olberman signing off for the final time last night ...

Sources said network brass basically paid the pundit to scram by working out an agreement in which he would get lost and continue to be paid.

He will have to stay off the air at least until fall as a result.

MSNBC issued a vague, unemotional statement saying it ended its contract with Olbermann, who hosted the top rated show on the network.

The statement read in part, "MSNBC thanks Keith for his integral role in MSNBC's success and we wish him well in his future endeavors." Nice.

Olbermann was suspended briefly a few months ago in light of some political donations the host made, but no one saw this swift exit coming.

Executives have said tensions between Olbermann and the network, which were palpable to begin with, have been running high since then.

Neither side has offered a formal explanation, but the network said 10 p.m. host Lawrence O'Donnell would move into Keith's slot Monday.

What do you think of the move? Is MSNBC crazy for bidding happy trails to such a high-rated host? Good riddance or good luck to Keith?

Dear I'M Pleezed, two words, mental health. Get some!
I will miss Keith and Countdown very much, so not much reason to watch MSNBC anymore, unless I want to watch Lockkup for the 500th time. Nice move MSNBC.

So sad, that Comcast has such a narrow minded and childish way of dealing with a character is such high intergrity. Keith Rocks, I will no longer watch anything related to NBC or affiliated with Comcast. You have just lost a viewer and subscriber. I will seek my news elsewhere. You guys "SUCK"!

How glad I am that I sold my Comcast shares. Now I will cease to watch MSNBC. I watch R. Maddows and C. Matthews but my main reason for watching was Keith Olberman. The takeover of the media by capitalist/conservative/Republican right-wingers, is really a sad state of affairs. It amounts to censorship. To hell with Comcast and MSNBC.

I no longer watch mnbc because they fire keith olbermann. now I watch CNN news channel, the hell with comcast the middle class needs a voice.

Keith was so extremely vial every night he became just an angry white man. His ratings sucked. That is why he was fired.

I started watching MSNBC because of the Keith Olberman show. Its not the same without him. He was the bomb!!! Screw the network! I'll just go back to watching CNN. What a loss for the viewers!!! Sounds like Keith deflated somebody's ego at the network!!! Don't worry Keith - Pride is before a great fall and humility before honor!!!! Your still No. 1 in my book!!!!

F*uck MSNBC for firing Kith Oberman, I will never watch that network again even though I like Racheal Meddow. F*ck them!!! CNN here I come!

This story is wacko. The fact that there is video of a signoff tells everybody it's not a "firing". Firings in broadcasting happen AFTER, not before, a broadcast. Clearly then, this was negotiated by both parties. Additionally, staying off the air on competing media is a standard contractual agreement when somebody leaves, and has been a standard practice for decades. Who do you guys think you're fooling?

I started watching MSNBC in the evening because I really like Countdown with Keith Olbermann. After that I became addicted to the show and others... I will still watch MSNBC without Countdown yet I am concerned about how Comcast had played a part in this. Al Frankin, Senator from Minnesota, had predicted that if Comcast has aquired NBC that their control will control media content. I wonder now if the Comcast NBC deal should have been disapproved because... well because of this? I don't know. I will miss Keith.

that's it for msnbc! I will NEVER return to you now i will follow Keith to where he goes and to HELL with you at nbc tv!!
