Madonna Compares Bullying Gays to Holocaust

by at . Comments

Bullying is getting a lot of publicity these days, with an outspoken Madonna joining a chorus of celebrities in voicing opposition to this disturbing trend.

Not surprisingly, the music icon used stronger words than most.

Madonna at the Golden Globes

Appearing via satellite on The Ellen DeGeneres Show, Madonna makes a heartfelt plea to end bullying, which she likens to lynching or the Holocaust.

Madonna never minces words.

"I'm incredibly disturbed and saddened by the overwhelming number of teen suicides that have been reported lately because of bullying," she says.

"Suicide in general is disturbing. Teenagers committing suicide is extremely disturbing, but to hear that teenagers are taking their lives because they are being bullied in schools and dormitories, what have you, is kind of unfathomable."

Madonna, who says she was bullied herself as a kid in Michigan, was just getting started on a "rampage" troubled kids could all learn a lesson from ...

"I still feel different," she says. "I can totally relate to the idea of feeling isolated and alienated. I was incredibly lonely as a child, as a teenager. I have to say I never felt like I fit in in school. I wasn't a jock. I wasn't an intellectual."

"There was no group that I felt a part of. I just felt like a weirdo."

It wasn't until her gay ballet teacher took her under his wing and introduced her to a community of artists that she felt "it was OK to be different."

The gay community "has been incredibly supportive of me," says the 52-year-old star. "I wouldn't have a career if it weren't for the gay community."

She's been talking to her children about bullying, too.

"We talk a lot about the importance of not judging people who are different - not judging people who don't fit into our expected view of what's cool and what isn't," she says. "The concept that we are torturing teenagers because they are gay - it's unfathomable. It's like lynching black people or Hitler exterminating Jews."

"Sorry if I'm going on a rampage right now, but this is America. The land of the free and the home of the brave. I think it would be interesting for everybody to try one simple experiment: Try to get through the day ... without gossiping about somebody. Not only that, not even listening to gossip, walking away from it."

"Can you imagine what your day would be like? How much more free time you'd have? I also feel like you'd feel about better about yourself."

If that's a rampage, no need to apologize, Madge. Bravo, we say. In light of what's happening with Demi Lovato and thousands of other teens from all walks of life, it's a message we could all learn from. Tolerance. Acceptance. Love.

@pak31: But it's harder for kids to deal with it than adults, and sometimes bullies go over the top.

This is ridiculous- I can't believe how ignorant people still are in 21st century america! Who the f**k cares if your gay? Your not allowed to love omeone jut because the 'bible' says so? Well your PRECIOUS bible might say being gay is a sin but it aslo says to love & not judge your fellow man. In case all you idiot haven't noticed- the bible is just a collection of stories meant to help guide you through life. Like any other story it not meant to be taken literally- it supposed to help provide morals. People say god is all-loving & all forgiving & yet they say the bible is god word? Do you honestly think someone a pure as 'god' would want to write 'gays are evil & disgusting how dare they try to love someone' ya right... Stfu & let ppl love who they want to love & live how they want to live. As long as they aren't hurting anyone- what's the problem??

Gays and straights have been bullied since the dawn of time. To kill yourself over it is ridiculous. If bullying caused suicide there would be little human life left. Yes, bullying is wrong but people need to stand up to it and/or ignore it. Love yourself and stop taking to heart what some heartless person says to you. THEY are the ones with the problem not you. I think bringing attention to it will help and maybe get the bullies and the people being bullied to think about it but it's not comparable to the Holocaust.

Madonna is an old crone, who, at her advanced age, has lost her senses. She is a popstar, a crappy one at that. Who would take her seriously.

uuugh love you madonna, you are wonderful.

Luisa48 said "We should love the people, but we don't have to love their evil and perverted ways" True. People are welcome to judge others all they want. If you feel comfortable passing judgment on another person and the lives they lead, you're welcome to do so. In your mind. Please keep your self-righteousness to yourself however. May God forgive you. Just as you don't want people to "force their perversions" on you, no one wants you to force your small-minded intolerance on them.
Feel free to judge, keep it to yourself. May your mind and heart be opened to true love and compassion for your fellow man as Jesus does.

I totally agree wth her, it's a serious issue that needs to be addressed. Picking on gays and bullying them is not right. You're allowed to love who you want, love is love. Doesn't matter the race, colour, sex, or your country of origin. The ones who pick on them, are the pathetic ones. Bullying gays doesn't make you better, makes you the weaker and quite frankly, makes you all look like fools. Get used to the gays, it's the 21st century, it's not going away! I have no problems with it. Wtf's your excuse? And hey, randyjacksonsbutt.. you're an idiot.

It's an important topic, at least it's being talked about. I wish more celebrities would stand up, admit their gay instead of being bullied and living a lie.

I don't think Madonna's language was too strong. How is bullying a child to death any better or less evil than the Holocaust. In fact, I see little difference in the two, since gays were put in concentration camps and killed along with Jews and others. And Luisa48, LOL, the one who screams "GAY!" the loudest, always is themselves. Stop hating yourself and grow up.
