Miss Universe Body Paint Pics Stir Up Controversy

by at .

Is it possible for a beauty pageant to be too sexy?

That's the question directed at Miss Universe these days, as the organization has posed most of its 2010 contestants in almost nothing but body paint for a new set of promotional images.

Miss USA, Rima Fakih, and Miss Trinidad and Tobago, LaToya Woods, show off these looks in the examples below:

Some think these photos go too far.

"It's alarming that this has been turned into a Playboy-esque masquerade," Angie Meyer, a former pageant employee, told Fox News. "By implementing topless photos as part of the pageant process, they're putting applicants in an extremely compromising position."

As opposed to the bathing suit and evening gown segments of the event, which place contestants in uncompromising positions and are not based on appearances?

Responded Lark-Marie Anton, vice president of marketing and public relations for the organization, to the charges of inappropriateness:

"The contestants who compete at Miss Universe are diverse, as they represent more than 82 countries around the globe. Many of their cultures embrace nudity... We feel the images captured are fashionable and cutting edge!"

The Miss Universe pageant airs on August 23. Do you think these pictures cross a line?

In terms with that whole thing, if Ms. Woods was representing herself then it would be all fine and good, however, she was not. She was representing her country and that is where she crossed the line. Maybe now if she wants to she can feel very liberated to do. I am from Trinidad and no she should not have done. The other one done has a scandal to her name now she did that stupid shit. I hope the next one we send don't have a boo-boo too.

Can you see anything in their bodies which you can't see in bikini? There are no ofensive stuff, so enjoy the art.

I can understand how this is a form of art in photography, but feel it is inappropriate for Miss USA Pageant. I remember watching Miss USA as a child. It was beautiful, graceful and classy. I wouldn't let my daughter watch this now if they paid me to. But maybe this is marketing being implemented on purpose, to prevent children from watching??? The other question is, do these contestants have the option not to participate in this? What if someone felt very strongly about not posing topless, for the sake of art, for the sake of the show? Would this prevent them from getting far in the competition??
