Farrah Abraham Discusses Teen Mom Tragedy

by at . Comments

Celebrity teenage mothers such as Bristol Palin and Jamie Lynn Spears have plenty of financial and familial support to fall back on. Most are not so lucky.

Farrah Abraham, herself a star of Teen Mom on MTV, was struck by tragedy when daughter Sophia's dad, Derek Underwood, was killed in a car accident.

"It's getting easier," Abraham, now 19, tells Us Weekly of the crash that took his life in 2009. "It's hard to deal with the fact that Sophia never got to meet her dad ... but now that I've come out on the show about it, I'm really happy I did."

Despite a rocky relationship with Underwood (the couple hadn't spoken for four months before he died), Abraham says he would have been a great dad.

"He would have been loving and supportive and taken care of both of us. When Sophia was born, her face looked just like his, and so did her toes!"

"I made Sophia a baby book with notes he and I wrote to each other. It's a big collection of our relationship. I have pictures of us going to dances and lots of memories. I want her to know that he was a happy person who liked to have fun."

She's waiting for the right time to open up to Sophia. For now, she is leaning on her parents for help. She calls her relationship with her own mother, Debra Danielson, "a work in progress." The reasons why are surprising and sad.

Danielson was charged with domestic assault after tension over Abraham's seeming lack of attention toward her newborn escalated into an altercation. Danielson pleaded guilty to the lesser charge of interference with a police officer.

"We're a lot better. We try to go to counseling at least once a month. We've forgiven each other," says Abraham. "I see or speak to my parents [Danielson and dad Michael] daily now, and they're the best babysitters I could find!"

Dear Farrah and Girls, I love you for all that you are doing. I also love Maci and Amber You need to get a perspective on the real deal of life. You have to figure out your own life without Gary. Or if you really want him to be the best Dad there ever was.. My husband hasn't worked since January. He does Construction. Take Care

First of all, I watched this show from 16 & pregnant. I've seen Maci,Amber,Catelynn, and Farrah go through it all.(at least what the cameras let us see). The only one who has stepped up to the plate is Maci.Farrah is still learning I guess that's her excuse. I don't know what to say about Amber except that CPS needs to step in. YES I said it.Reasons why are: they live filthy, they are abusive, and they don't care for her right! In Catelynn's case I used to think wow how smart they were to give their baby up but I now see why. For the simple fact that they didn't want to grow up!It's still about how they blame their parents when THEY themselves are NOT any better. Sorry Catelynn and Tyler you gave your baby up because you were too lazy to take care for your baby and go to work for your baby.

I just want to say that Amber is the most annoying, whining, argumentative mother out of all these girls. Seriously, I agree with the person who said she is abusive, etc. I know Gary doesn't seem perfect, but, damn girl,if you're with him for the sake of your child, at least try to make it work!! All you do is jump down his throat about everything.Your daughter is going to pick up on your attitude towards her father and regard him in the same way. Be fair. Stop being pissed about your life cuz it's not just about YOU anymore.

Farrah didn't even want her boyfriend to know she was pregnant so she cant complain that hes "not around" because she didn't want him there in the first place she just feels stupid that they fought on the show and now hes dead she doesn't want to look like an a-hole. Its sad how pathetic she is. +++Follow on Twitter @Siidrock

Bailey - it's inspiring that you survived such a horrific event and feel that your life is better because you chose to keep your child. You sound like a strong, mature 16 year old. I would caution you, however, on your use of phrases like "at least I didn't get an abortion." The point of your post was to ask people not to pass judgment. I would ask the same of you. Please try not to pass judgment on those who have chosen to terminate a pregnancy - everyone has their own opinions and will do what is right for themselves. There's no need for hate.

I love the MTV show Teen Mom. I look foward to it every Tuesaday. Today is my "sweet sixteen" and I have a 10 1/2 month old daughter Isabella Grace. Her "dad" isn't and will never be in the picture. He was 30 when he raped me, I was 14. It really agitates me when people pass judgement on teen moms, especially me because they have no idea what the circumstances were. I'm blessed to have Isabella, she saved my life.
Before you pass judement on teen mothers, think of what I posted.
Atleast I, and all the other teen mothers out there did't get an abortion. Let god be the one that judges.

We realize that teen pregnancy is on the rise. Even my daughters best friend got pregnant when she was 16. (her baby "Meagan" is 4 now). None of us are perfect and we all make mistakes in life. The best thing we can do is give Farrah our positive support. Farrah seems like she's trying her best to raise her daughter (beautiful little girl btw!!)
She's gone though some tough times in the past. Her getting pregnant, the father Derek dying in a car crash (Council Bluffs, IA), her falling out with her parents, and getting scammed $3000 (a fraudulent car selling scheme from overseas).
But she stays positive and upbeat looking to the future and she's doing a great awesome job as a single mom.
So lets give her encouragement as we all need it when we end up hitting potholes in the road of life.

I never do this post comments on sites but I just wanted to let you know I am a fam of this show. I always wondered what your true story was and now it all makes sense. I lost a friend and cant imagine it being my babies dad. You are very strong. I am not much older than you and live on my own with the father of my baby and it is hard with both of us. Stay strong you girls will pull through and when you do it for yourself and her it makes it so much better, wish you the best of luck!

Nikay, go fuckk yourself. Everyone has different opinions and beliefs and you have a right to judge anyone? Grow up. You're pathetic.

Farrah Abraham Quotes

I think having a TV show that shows your personality and your intimate life, you know, showing your best friend, and then showing having sex ... to me it's kind of the same thing because both things are intimate.

[On her DUI arrest] I did not endanger anyone's life.
