Paul Shirley: Haiti Can Go Help Itself!

by at . Comments

Paul Shirley, a former journeyman NBA basketball player turned writer, is under fire today for recent comments about earthquake relief efforts in Haiti.

Namely, they put themselves in this mess, so he's not going to be donating any money. He has a right to that opinion, certainly, but his word choice?

In an essay published at FlipCollective, he says he "has not donated a cent" to Haiti and likens it to giving a homeless guy money. It's a lost cause.

"I don't think the people of Haiti will do much with my money either," he says.

The questions posed by his missive as a whole - whether events like the Hope For Haiti telethon are worthwhile, and whether a certain level responsibility for such a disaster lies with the victims of the disaster - are not entirely off base.

However, Paul Shirley might have considered an alternate ending.

In arguing that there should be some discourse on how the millions poured into Haiti will be spent, he writes a hypothetical message from the world to Haiti:

Dear Haitians –

First of all, kudos on developing the poorest country in the Western Hemisphere. Your commitment to human rights, infrastructure, and birth control should be applauded.

As we prepare to assist you in this difficult time, a polite request: If it's possible, could you not re-build your island home in the image of its predecessor? Could you not resort to the creation of flimsy shanty- and shack-towns? And could some of you maybe use a condom once in a while?

Sincerely,
The Rest of the World

Damn, P-Shir. Was the condom bit necessary? ESPN has already said he won't be back as a freelancer, and we suspect he may find other gigs hard to come by.

What do you think of Paul Shirley's comments on Haiti?

It's better than not trying. They are not asking you to sell your house to make a donation. It's like those lazy people, they always try to reason themselves out for not doing anything.

I heard a haitian say once, "With England to protect us, and America to feed us, why should we work!" Sick!

There are enough haitians in AMERICA taking jobs and smuggling drugs to help their OWN PEOPLE. A lot of that money sent down there will be used to build boats to get to america.

I cannot even imagine how our poor Black and White Homeless Americans begging on side of the road feel hearing about all these telethons and pleas to help people who are not even American citizens or taxpayers. All of our homeless should have first priority in any charity we are able to give. These Americans are former taxpayers and many our veterans. It is a disgrace and none of the world respects us for treating outsiders better than our own. They KNOW we are stupid. Our own people are going to start hating our country and turning terrorist if this continues.

Fuck where does this guy live imma marry him. I'm sick of these fucking 'support shithole children' ads on my tv all fucking day covered in flies and shit. If i went to haiti the first thing i'd do is fill a swimming pool with soapy water and dump them all in it, yuck,

I support rebuilding buildings and infrastructure but he is right about contraception. Overpopulation is a major problem and the UN needs to address this with contraception. Otherwise Haiti's problems will magnify over time. Free 3 monthly birth control shots should be a condition of aid for those out of work.

Actually Hellion, Lizz is right. In some parts of the world people have never seen or used condoms and would need an education on how to use them. They're not the most natural things in the world you know. You are using- taken for granted knowledge, that you and most people in developed countries are given-that is, of sex and education and applying it to other societies, assuming they have access to it. A bit of critical thinking wouldn't go amiss.

A far better idea is to hold off donating for the moment, and help out when Haiti is no longer the cause du jour. Right now there's so much money being poured into the country in a well meant effort to help that a lot of it will probably go to waste (if not disapear altogether).

Hate as to what happened to their country but they have had yrs of corrupt govt there! You would think after all of the stuff they have to go thru day to day living they would want someone halfway honest to run the place ! Billions are coming into the place now, who is going to manage it? there are no banks ?! No govt to speak of ?! You can bet someone has their meathooks out waiting ! As for the"entertainers" telethon, why can't they do this without telling everyone ? give it up without letting anyone know !!! hypocrites for sure !! have to have their egos stroked !!
