Paul Shirley: Haiti Can Go Help Itself!

by at . Comments

Paul Shirley, a former journeyman NBA basketball player turned writer, is under fire today for recent comments about earthquake relief efforts in Haiti.

Namely, they put themselves in this mess, so he's not going to be donating any money. He has a right to that opinion, certainly, but his word choice?

In an essay published at FlipCollective, he says he "has not donated a cent" to Haiti and likens it to giving a homeless guy money. It's a lost cause.

"I don't think the people of Haiti will do much with my money either," he says.

The questions posed by his missive as a whole - whether events like the Hope For Haiti telethon are worthwhile, and whether a certain level responsibility for such a disaster lies with the victims of the disaster - are not entirely off base.

However, Paul Shirley might have considered an alternate ending.

In arguing that there should be some discourse on how the millions poured into Haiti will be spent, he writes a hypothetical message from the world to Haiti:

Dear Haitians –

First of all, kudos on developing the poorest country in the Western Hemisphere. Your commitment to human rights, infrastructure, and birth control should be applauded.

As we prepare to assist you in this difficult time, a polite request: If it's possible, could you not re-build your island home in the image of its predecessor? Could you not resort to the creation of flimsy shanty- and shack-towns? And could some of you maybe use a condom once in a while?

Sincerely,
The Rest of the World

Damn, P-Shir. Was the condom bit necessary? ESPN has already said he won't be back as a freelancer, and we suspect he may find other gigs hard to come by.

What do you think of Paul Shirley's comments on Haiti?

I agree with him 100%. All of these people hating him for what his says is complete BS! Everyone has a right to an opnion, just because his opinion doesnt fit well into everyone else's bandwagon approach to 'disaster relief" doesnt make him anymore wrong or right. But bashing someone for having an opinion different than that of the majority is hypocritical and ludacris. In a country based on diversity, you people should be ashamed. Continue sitting at home with you comfortable theory on life and the appropriate response to everything as based on what everyone else thinks. Youre only allowing yourself to be a SHEEP!

This guy is STUPID! The reason why they are poor is mainly due the first world!! Spain expoliation of the americas, EEUU invasion, France colonies, a millionary fine which they were still paying till WW2, etc...
That's probably some of the reasons why they are poor... RETARD! And by the way, Haití is a very religious society... so if they don't use the condom ... GO ASK THE POPE ASSHOLE!!!

Well he certainly IS entitled to his opinion... But guess what? So are the rest of us... And this worthless piece-of-sh*t is a waste of human flesh and needs a lesson in life-or the lack thereof (me, exercising my right to my opinion) And dipsh*t (yes, to the douchebag in the article): We don't need such an unintelligent d*ckwad speaking for US--the rest of the world.

I think instead of donating money for Haiti, we should start a collection for Paul. After being gusty enough to speak the truth we should use the donations to find him and hook him up with a few whores as a reward for him. Ive looked on craiglist and you can get them hourly! and if all else fails, my poor cuz who paddled his way to Haiti has some cougars avaliable while he is gone....I could maybe con them into rewarding good ol Paul.

I believe that we should help others by the word of God, but I don't accept idol worshipers and majority of that island does voodoo. I believe the earth quake was a wake up call but shud not be put on the U.S., Where are the drug lords? The corrupt politicians? The sorcerers/devil worshippers?still there, let them conjure up a spell to clean the mess.....

I say if Haiti people want money for stuff other than condoms that most of them should sacrifice themselves. They should volunteer to be put in a cage with a 200lb or bigger chimp and we'll put the action on PPV with a portion of profits being donated to Haiti. Call me crazy but it sounds good to me! Amen!

Who is the "they" that certain people keep saying should be tired of courruption? Some people have no idea what it's like to live in a country that has historically been "led" by corrupt indivduals. How do masses of poor people with little education and know-how, all of a sudden overthrow the powers that be and successfully install a cohesive, efficient government that gets things done? Dude! An earthquake hit an impoverished country and killed in the hundreds of thousands. Even if any of your points are semi-valid, does proper condom use, and not donating contribute to what plagues the place now. The same thing could happen in the U.S. or anywhere in the world - no matter how sophisticated. What guarantee is there that the U.S. will always have the resources to recover from disaster?

Good for him. I totally agree. As a former Aid Distribution Manager in Saginaw, MI, I can tell you from experience that charity to Haiti is a waste of money. This money should be used in this country. Fix up multi-event arenas which generate money. Or donate that money for athletic scholorships. In Saginaw alone the public golf courses are atrocious. These public courses generate large revenues in America. Leave these filthy Haitians to their own. They brought this upon themselves, and just look at one of them. Do they look like they'll do much if you gave them a $50 bill? People I emplore you STOP the madness of sending money to Haiti. They'll waste it.

Look a crying, devastated, lost child in the eye and tell them "I'm sorry but because your parents didn't use condoms and you were born in the wrong country you don't 'deserve' my help." One word for Mr Shirley & likeminded others-Karma-be very afraid.
