Reading through some of the comments, I saw some really ignorant ones.
For one, L.J Smith did not choose to have the show ride on the Twilight/Vampire crazy obsession ride. It was the CW that chose to. She simply sold them the rights and that was that.
Also, if you've read the books, Twilight rips a lot off of The Vampire Diaries (so much that I'm amazed Stephenie Meyer actually got away with it) and I think it actually failed in the Twilight books. And I think that's a major reason why the TVD show is so different from the books.
And yes, as absolutely CRAZY as it sounds, even with Twilight there would still be vampire fans. Hence why there shows like Buffy, Angel, Moonlight. Or the numerous Dracula movie remakes. Or how The Vampire Diaries is 15 years older than Twilight. Oh, and ever hear of Anne Rice and her Vampire Chronicles?

My sister and I bursted out laughing when we saw that. I'm so proud of Ian for how devoted he is to convincing the public that TDV is NOT a copy of Twilight, rather if either is a copy, it would be Twilight copying The Vampire Diaries. Which, of course, isn't the case, but if it were, the evidence is in the release dates. :P Hurray for Damon! Hurray for Ian!

ok so when i heard ian aka damon say this about twilight i couldnt stop laughing. i mean dont get me wrong i love twilight but come on vampires like damon who drink HUMAN blood are soooo much cooler!! i think that the show is so much better then twilight...how could it not be have u seen paul W. without a shirt??? no words can describe it :) heaven!!!lol

Ok...I just have to say. I love Twilight and I love The Vampire Diaries. The are actually quite different books and shows. But as to the comment about L.J. Smith even trying to make Elena look like Bella, that is just ridiculous. She sold the rights to the book. She did not have a say in the casting. She was just as unsure about it as some of us were. But everything is about timing. Sure, if Twilight has not come out and made everyone "vampire" crazy her books may not have become a show. But who cares??? Love them for the separate things they are! They are both great!!!!

OK, I'm a fan of both Vampire Diaries in Twilight.
Honestly, I think Ian is WAY hotter than Robert,
and that the hottest person in Twilight is Jacob played by
Taylor Lautner. The one thing i don't like about Twilight
is: the vampires SPARKLE. Vampires aren't supposed to
SPARKLE in the sun, They're supposed to DIE.
I think that L.J. Smith's idea of Damon and Stefan having
rings that let them walk around in the sun is very SMART.
SO TO ALL OF YOU VAMPIRE DIARY HATERS:
atleast the vampires in vampire diaries don't sparkle.

i dont agree with you vickian i LOVE twilight and vampire diaries.
i read vampire diaries before twilight and loved it so much tht i fell in love with vampires and when twilight came out i read them and loved then and if you look at it like this twilight and vampire academy are so diffrent and NOTHING can steal the light from twilight ;)

I love when he said that. I don't why people are suddenly making a big think out of it. To vickian-it happened that way. She didn't assign the actors, the director did. Besides, The Vampire Diaries were out before Twilight saga. I ain't going to dis out Twilight because I do like it.

Just so you know, if you Twinerds read a real book (Vampire Diaries), you will see that Stephenie Meyer freaking stole everything, the whole concept from VD, emptied it from any good plot, emptied the characters for personality, made them crap and then wrote Twilight.
Human girl (Elena = Bella) falls in love with mysterious handsome sexy boy (Stefan = Edward). Mysterious handsome sexy boy is a vampire, but he does not feed on humans, he feeds on animals! Awww, they're both brooding, self-loathing and would do anything not to be vampires.

Yes I hate Twilight. I was a fan once, but then I saw the light. Twilight is EXTREMELY overrated and mostly loved and marketed by little tweeny insecure teenage-girls.
Vampire Diaries is the real deal and Damon Salvatore is a real vampire. THE best vampire.
And Ian is MUUUUUUCH hotter than Robert Pattinson ever dreams of being.

Admittedly, I was shocked. But then I laughed until I was crying. It was priceless. And I don't know what the Twilighters problem is - every major tv show - in particular sfupernatural or sci-fi has somewhere down the line made fun of another popular/major work. I mean Buffy made fun of Dracula (which I LOVE). But there was no scandal there. Dracula is more of a masterpiece as well and older. Twi-fans should take this in good faith cz other fandoms usually do, think its being blown out of proportion tbh.
ps, robert is hot but ian = wowsers :D

Ian is HOT! - I can't take my eyes off him when he is on screen. I think Robert Pattinson is one of the homliest guys to hit the big screen. I cringe when I see him in the magazines. The Vampire Diaries may not be the greatest show on TV, but I watch just for the Damon character. Damon can suck my blood anytime!
