Katherine Heigl portrays a woman who is clueless in the ways of romance in The Ugly Truth. In real life, the 30-year-old actress - who is as beautiful as she is outspoken - thinks she has it pretty well together on that subject.
"In my early 20s, I didn't know what I wanted," the InStyle cover girl reflected in the magazine's August issue, "If you're just getting to know yourself while you are in a serious relationship – it's like you're trying on different personalities."
The Grey's Anatomy star says that whereas at first "you try to see what fits, but there is that real you in there somewhere," she came around when she met singer Josh Kelley, who is now her husband of 18 months, in 2005.
"I was fed up with trying to be somebody else, and got really lucky and met a great guy who loved me for me," Katherine Heigl told the fashion magazine.
Heigl believes her experiences have not only helped her learn what she wants in romance but also what she wants in a movie – and it always rated PG-13.
In a real relationship, Katherine Heigl says, "you're probably going to drop F-bombs once in a while. You're going to say some things that are kind of harsh."
"And you're definitely going to talk about sex. It doesn't have to be Snow White and Prince Charming. That's my problem with a lot of romantic comedies."
The Ugly Truth co-star Gerard Butler says this attracted him to working with Heigl, who he calls the "sexiest, smartest, sassiest, funniest actress out there."
