Everyone saying there is a difference between a beating and a spanking, what is the difference? If you hit someone with an open hand anywhere other than their butt, is it a beating? A spank=a hit on the butt. Hitting=beating. Call it what you want-a swat, a pop, etc-it is what it is...hitting. For all you arguing that unruly kids need a spanking, what about unruly adults? Next time you're pulled over for speeding, should the cop hit your butt instead of giving you a ticket? Some people are arguing that it's OK to use a belt. If a cop used a belt on you and left welts on you, would you thank him for disciplining you or be upset? I'm not saying people shouldn't discipline their kids. But, really, can't you think of any better ways to discipline? Here's a few suggestions-time out, take away a toy, take away a privilege, don't let them go somewhere they want to (i.e. a birthday party), earlier bedtime for a week, no dessert, grounding, no TV for a week, etc. Yes, discipline your kids so they behave and grow up to be good, but who says the only effective form of discipline is hitting?

This is truly pathetic. This is the reason why this poor family has so many problems because the media just talks a lot of crap. I know i was spanked a couple of times in my childhood; every parent does it soo please save your "oh my gods" and " how could she "!

NEWS FLASH!!!!!! spanking is an effective form of discipline, but only if you take the time to explain to your children the purpose. i was spanked repeatedly as a child buy hands, belts, wooden spoons, wooden paddles you name it. but it seems my folks had more brains than alot of parents these days and they took the time to tell me that what i did was wrong, or what i did was dangerous. anyone who says that that was the wrong way to do it, or that parents like that should not have kids or be taken to jail and what have you, you people are insulting my parents!!!! my parents were right to spank me as a child! i love my family, my parents, i don't break the law, i don't get drunk or do drugs, i am a responsible human being. i even proudly serve in the military to protect your freaking rights! i agree that not all children need to be spanked, but for crying out loud, grow a pair and don't be afraid to spank your kids!

this is wrong, wrong, wrong!!!! in the first place, kate could have used other actions like taking the whistle away, taking the child in the home for a time out. in the second place, spanking a child in the presence of strangers is an unnecessary humiliation that the kid interalizes and can deal with in unhealthy ways. if kate is going to impose herself on the rest of us, maybe she is the one who needs to learn to behave appropiately. when i was growing up, we had neighbors who regularly spanked their one child out in public. it did not improve the child's behaviour. she continued to have obvious impulse control issues and a lot of acting out. in this case, the other children in the family behaved more compassionately than kate seems to be capable of.

I know how kate fells she is probally soooo stressed!!!!! But i under stand if you get stressed just dont spank you children i have 3 children. i know how it feels to get stressed 2 boys and 1 girl! Total drama goes along through their fights. I mean i threaten to beat them but if they carrie on i just send them to their rooms!!!!!!!!

That is what is wrong with today's society and children. Parents are afraid to spank their children because of police getting called. Their is absolutely nothing wrong with spanking a child when they do something they are not suppose to do. This is the way children learn! Kate Gosselin's attitude may stink and she may be a bitch but she certainly can spank her kids if need be without being criticized about it.
