Nicole Lamarche on Carrie Prejean: Gay Marriage Stance is Flawed

by at . Comments

While it's always nice - and entertaining - to hear the thoughts of various celebrities, Miley Cyrus, Heidi Montag and others that have confronted the issue of gay marriage over the last few days aren't exactly qualified to speak on the topic.

Then there's Nicole Lamarche.

Like Carrie Prejean, Lamarche was named Miss California in 2003. She's now an ordained minister at Cotuit Federated Church in Cotuit, MA.

Lamarche has released a statement that defends the rights of gay couples to marry. To sum up, she says:

  • Those - such as Prejean, who said her answer was "biblically correct" - that cite the Bible in their anti-gay marriage stance are simply picking and choosing a passage or two that appears to back up their beliefs.

However, the same Book (Leviticus) that claims "lying with men" is an "abomination," condemns the act of eating shrimp and lobster together, as well as wearing material woven of two kinds of material, in the same exact way.

  • Therefore, while it's impossible to interpret the Bible literally and live one's life according to every passage, it's quite possible - nay, encouraged - to live one's life according to what Christians believe God to represent: love, for all people, especially outcasts.

Makes perfect sense to us.

Lamarche writes:

"As a pastor and a former Miss California, I am often asked to interpret what the Word of God has to say on a particular subject. I am quite confident that God prefers that we human beings stick to speaking for ourselves. And yet there are occasions when God’s Word is used as a weapon, and I feel compelled to speak.

In the past few days, much has been made of the words of Miss California USA, Carrie Prejean. She stated that marriage is between a man and a woman. I write not in response to her opinion, but rather about her comments that followed: that the Bible condones her words. She said, 'It's not about being politically correct, it's about being biblically correct.' While this sentiment is shared by many who seek to condemn gay people and gay marriage, citing pieces of the Bible to further one’s own prejudice fails to meet the Bible on its own terms.

Most people seeking to condemn gay people point to the Book of Leviticus, where we read that men lying with men is an abomination. However, we rarely hear of other verses found in the book of Leviticus that are equally challenging. For example, Leviticus also tells us that eating shrimp and lobster is an abomination. And that a person should not wear material woven of two kinds of material—an impossible mandate for a pageant contestant!

In Paul’s letter to the community in Corinth we read, ‘For it is shameful for a woman to speak in church….’ And yet these words have not prevented Christian denominations from ordaining women, such as myself. Sadly, the Bible has been used to further prejudice throughout history. We have used it to permit ourselves to enslave people; to conquer and kill; and to denigrate the earth.

The truth is that it is difficult to know for sure the intentions of the biblical authors, but we do know something about God. Those of us who know God through Jesus of Nazareth know that he went to great lengths to express God’s love to people who were labeled as outcasts. He spent time with children, prostitutes, and lepers, all of whom were labeled as outside of the grasp of the Holy. As we continue to seek God’s vision for us as a nation grounded in a love for justice, I pray that we might move closer to the cause of grace.”

I am a christian and straight and I am sickened that you Christians are so predjudice. It's sick. I was brought up in a strict catholic family and was taught to treat someone how you wanted to be treated yourself. And I have. Judge someone by their actions not by their sexuality. It has no relevance to their personality. Believe me out of the gay and straight people I know, it is the gay ones who always treat me with respect and kindess. The straight? well I won't even go there otherwise I'd be here all day!

So....after watching one of the sweetest clips of two happy people who couldn't make it more obvious that they are in love, you still think it's wrong.Just look at the way they kissed, touched and looked at each other.Wouldn't you rather see that, than see people living in fear and misery? I'm not going to argue anymore,it just causes hurt, and my heart is truly sick of it all.

Jesus does want you to know him! He does Love you and care for you. Come as you are. He does forgive. Let go of your pride and get to know the source of Life, Love, and Joy.

Your right when you say Love is Love
I'm afraid to know love you have to know the source of Love, Jesus! There is that funny perversion thing again with those that do not know God. Satan likes to twist, pervert, take everything God created and put his own spin on things.
Let's not argue anymore because it's useless. It's true when the bible says that unbelievers have scales over their eyes and cannot see the truth. Until you accept Jesus you will never know True Love.

GOOD FOR YOU CARRIE PREJEAN!!!You don't need to be an expert on anything to comment on GAY marriage or Miss USA the issue is black and white. God created Man, then he created a WOMAN for the MAN. WOMAN with a MAN can procreate. Man with man or woman with woman CANNOT!!!IT GOES AGAINST NATURE! If everyone turned gay we would all need artificial insemination to keep procreation. Our children would need do the same!Even without the Bible involved it is obvious that our bodies were not created for same sex marriage!!! Oh,yeah, "Tony AMhu" and I also have never eaten pork or seafood as the Bible says we should not. My children do not either, and there are many other Christian Seventh Day Adventists who do not either!Happy Sabbath!!!

I see Niclole didn't mention that Jesus was hanging out with gays.Because he wasn't. If she condones homosexuality, she's not a legitimate Christian paster.
I find it kind of funny[although I really don't}
The liberals are always talking about accepting others opinions, but not if they don't agree with them.
They trashed Miss California[ the real winner] because she said marriage is between a man and a woman.
Obama said the same thing. Amazingly, SILENCE!
The libs are always pushing women's rights and empowerment.
They trashed Sarah Palin, turning over every rock the corrupt, deceitful, totally dishonest and uncredible press, led by NBC, MSNBC, CNN, ABC and CBS could find.
Times are a changin. Hopefully the incompetent and ever apologizing for the US, current Prez doesn't get us attacked with his casual and opaque view of terrorism that is definitely out there right Now!
Time to take our country back, America! Let's Go!

The Bible is a collection of stories, not the word of God. Ten Commandments = word of God. Get a Hebrew to English version of the actual Bible, not the KJV. Do you know who King James was? He interpreted the Hebrew version as he saw fit, not as the word is written. There is NO mention of homosexuality in the original Hebrew Bible. But then most avoid research as it voids they're ability to use the Bible to spew hate.

I didn't read all the comments so I don't know what everyone has said. But honestly - the Bible is true, but most of the old testament is from a time and from a law that no one still practices. The law of Moses was done away with Christ.
I am a scientist in reality and in heart. I believe in evolution (yes, we have similar biological ancestors as primates). I do not need to turn to the Bible for this truth. All you have to do is look yourself, at humans - men are not meant to be with men. Women are not meant to be with women. Period. Scientifically and anatomically, it is not supposed to work that way. Men are made to compliment women emotionally, etc but most importantly physically.
If you want to do it, that's fine - but it is not marriage. Marriage is defined by religion - so let it stay with religion. If homosexuals want legal rights - then lets give them legal rights - but it is not marriage by definition.
