America Ferrera: Hating on The Hills, Gossip Girl, 90210

Are you sure you don't wanna diss Heroes and Grey's Anatomy while you're at it, America? Jealous much? They're just TV shows, lighten up.

It's hard to believe anyone would hate on awesome shows like The Hills, Gossip Girl and 90210, but America Ferrera is evidently not a fan.

Which may explain the eye-roll incident.

In any case, in Seventeen magazine, the Ugly Betty star calls out the aforementioned programs for a lack of "close, genuine female relationships."

America Ferrera in Seventeen

"Like, if you're watching The Hills or 90210, all of the backstabbing shapes the way we act – you go to school, and you think that your job is to find a sworn enemy and be jealous of each other," America Ferrera said.

"I mean, I love Blake Lively, [her Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants co-star and the lead actress on Gossip Girl]; she’s a wonderful friend of mine, but shows like Gossip Girl kind of condition us to be mean."

America Ferrera knows girls can be mean, recalling how she's "worked with other girls before and it was pretty catty."

But working with Lively, Amber Tamblyn and Alexis Bledel in The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants and its sequel has been "one of the most wonderful experiences I’ve had with girl relationships," she says.

This lesbian needs to get laid, high, drunk, whatever it takes to loosen this fat uptight bitch up. I guess success on "Ugly Betty" gives her the right to publicly air her disapproval of other shows huh? F U Ferrera! The ratings will show that plenty of people disagree with you - just keep it to yourself.

  2. LC Lover Says:

Yeah I don't see Blake Lively or my girl LC coming out and dissing Ugly Betty.

  3. Dizita Says:

Not to mention that her own show focus on the fashion industry... like there aren't any bitchy women there...

Cmon! Everyone can see the difference between tv shows and the reality! If you don't, just use your head!

Who does this bitch think she is? Her dumb show wasnt expected to do as well as it did (I am still wondering why its still on the air), case and point.......SHE WAS CAST AS "UGLY" (not pretty)BETTY, because she is ugly. Yah you can add make-up and heels, but she is still the fat ugly girl in school everybody made fun of. Blake and LC on the other hand? The beautiful and Poplular girls everyone either liked or were jealous of.......kinda like this mexican girl here =)

I love this girl, and its what's worse is all of you are calling her fat and ugly. She is so pretty! And she has curves, she isn't a stick like most women want to be! And let me think.............I love all the other actresses that are in 90210 and Gossip girl, but you dont think that they would look ugly without make up? Do yourself a favour and wipe off that mask on your face and look in the mirror. No one likes a bitch who makes fun.

Hey, don't bring her weight/looks/sexuality into this! Slagging off her weight is offensive, apart from the fact that it's totally irrelevant to what's going on here.

I think Ferrera places far too much importance in the influence of television. You can tell that by the way that she goes on and on about how she's making a real difference to people's lives (umm, no, doctors and teachers make a difference to people's lives, TV actors maybe make a difference to people's evenings.)as if people will watch Ugly Betty and immediatly become feminist and empowered, and then they will watch Gossip Girl and immediatly become shallow and narcissistic. Frankly, if anyone in the world is that changeable, then they already have a serious problem with self-confidence, regardless of whether they watch a 'fat' girl on their TV screens each week.

So maybe America Ferrera gets fanmail from a few incredibly insecure american teenagers saying that she has changed their lives, and I'm sure that's very sweet and I'm sure it makes her day, but the fact is that that type of person is very much in the minority--most people look on television as nothing more than entertainment, not a statement about identity and not accurate moral guidance.

In fact, I think she just generally places too much importance in her work--she's not the only non-size-zero A-lister, she's not the only latina actress in hollywood. It's not like she's really breaking that many boundaries. Don't get me wrong. She's a good actress and she's pretty, but she needs to come back down to earth and see the real world.

The fact that Ugly Betty is tanking in the ratings suggests that viewers aren't really interested in preachy epiphanies taught by a self righteous frump week after week. As much as this would annoy Ferrera if it were pointed out to her, any entertainment value Ugly Betty has comes from the entertainingly bitchy characters such as Marc, Amanda and Wilhemina.

Ferrera is the Janeane Garofalo of her generation--a moderately attractive, moderately talented actress who resents the success of more attractive and charismatic actresses and mistakes sourness for profundity.
