Paige: the trouble begins when Laius, received a prediction from the oracle of Apollo that his son will kill him. Thushe and his wife Jocasta give their infant son to a servant to kill by abandoning it on a mountainside. but the servant doesnt have the heart to kill the baby, instead giving it to another man, who gives it to the childless king and queen of Corinth. These adoptive parents name the boy Oedipus. Laius is killed years later at a crossroads outside Thebes.
Paige: The play opens in front of the Theban pllace. Oedipus, the king of Thebes, asks a passing priest why he and his followers are lamenting and praying. The priest replies that they pray to the gods to end the plague that has beset Thebes. this plague has wasted the city's crops and pastures and rendered all Theban women sterile. so Oedipus send Creon to the Oracle for help.
paige: ENTER CREON
Creon: the oracle told me that the plague on Thebes was caused by the murder of Laius. the murderer was born in Thebes and still lives there, and if they can find him and banish him, the plague will be lifted.
Oedipus: tell me more details of Laius's death.
Creon: Laius was killed as he left thebes on a pilgrimage. one man said that the king was killed by a band of robbers.
Oedipus: i swear that i am going to solve this mystery.
paige: ENTER TEIRESIAS
Paige: Oedipus begs him for jelp to find the killer. But Teiresias states theat he never should have come, adn asks to leave. and Oedipus gets angry.
Teiresias: look within yourself before you blames others.
Oedipus: If you dont tell me im going to blame Laius's death on you.
Teiresias: you are the cursed polluter of this land, have you eyes, and do not see your own damnation? eyes, and cannot see what company you keep? whos son you are? i tell you , you have sinned. You are rich nowm, but soon be a begger.
paige: JOCASTA ENTERS ON AN AGRUMENT BETWEEN OEDIPUS AND CREON, AND CREON CHARGED OEDIPUS WITH RULING UNJUSTLY.
jocasta: please listen to Creon and be merciful.
paige: AND RELUCTANTLY oEDIPUS LETS CREON GO, JOCASTA QUESTIONED OEDIPUS. AND HE REVEALS TEIRESIAS'S PROPHECIES.
Jocasta: no man can see the feature, and i have proof. remember the story of the prophecy an oracle once made about Laius: that he would be killed by his own son. But that never happened. instead Laius was killed by robbers at a place where three roads met. so if Laius's prophecy didnt come true, why should yours?
Paige: JOCASTA'S MENTION OF THE MEETING OF THREE ROADS TROUBLES oEDIPUS, BRINGING BACK MEMORIES OF A MURDER HE COMMITTED LNG AGO AT A SIMILAR PLACE. HE ASKS jOCASTA WHAT LAIUS LOOKED LIKE, AND HER DESCRIPTION MATCHES HIS MEMORY. oEDIPUS NOW BEGINS TO SUSPECT THAT TEIRESIAS'S WORDS WERE TRUE.
Oedipus: how many men were with Laius?
Jocasta: 5
Oedipus: who was the eye witness?
Jocasta: the man ran away to teh country when he found that you became the king of Thebes.
Paige: OEDIPUS AND JOCASTA WHILE THEY WAIT FOR THE EYEWITNESS
Oedipus: i once went to the oracle to ask if i was my fathers real son.. but instead i foudn out that i was going to kill my father and marry my mother. and in that fear i came to a crossroads where three roads met, and there i was accosted by a haughty man. and i killed him. if this man turns out to have been Laius, then ill be banished forever.
Jocasta: Even if you did kill Laius, the oracle's prophesy for Laius still would not be true, since the son taht should have killed him is dead. they return to the house.
paige: TO FIND OUT WHO HE REALLY IS.. OEDIPUS FOUND THE SHEPHERD, WHO GAVE THE TO THE MESSAGER. OEDIPUS QUESTIONED HIM AND FOUND OUT THAT HE WAS LAIUS'S BABY. HE RUNS INTO THE HOUSE SCREAMING..AND JOCASTA HUNGED HERSELF.
paige: OEDIPUS CAME OUT WITH OUT WITH INJURED EYES SHOCKED THE CHORUS
Chorus: why did you injured yourself Oedipus?
Oedipus: I dont want to see when all i can see is ugliness.
Chorus: death would have been better than blindness,
Oedipus: how can i meet my parents in the underworld with seeing eyes. how can i looked upon children whiom i had begotten in sin, i wish i could dam up my ears as well. please just hide me away from human sight.
paige: OEDIPUS WAS CAST AWAY FROM THEBES. AND WAITING FOR THE INSTRUCTIONS OF APOLLO. THE CHORUS ASKS THE AUDIENCE TO REMEMBER THE STORY OF OEDIPUS, THE GREATEST MEN: HE ALONE COULD SOLVE DEFFICULT RIDDLES AND WAS ENVIED MY HIS FELLOWS FOR HIS PREOPERITY. AND NOW THE GREATEST OF MISFORTUNES HAS BEFALLEN HIM.
