Ahhh...if 14 is NOT fat, then I must be living on the wrong planet. Sorry, fat chicks do NOT get as much love, so quit making excuses. Most guys would take ugly and thin over fat and beautiful any day, just a fact of nature.
I liked Valerie before, and wish her luck, but for now she's fat, and not attractive to me. You may yell at me, but I speak probably for at least 80% of the guys out there, so tough.

Size 14 may be "normal," but then again, the majority of "normal" Americans are now overweight and obesity related illnesses such as type two diabetes are becoming more common because of it. In this case "normal" is NOT healthy. Bertinelli is 5'2" which means at size 14 she is definitely overweight for her height. (And that huge mumu she's wearing on the cover of People magazine makes her look even fatter.) I don't condone women looking like stick figures, but on the other hand, fat is not healthy either. Just because fat is becoming the norm does not make it desirable. A size 14 might work on a tall, big-boned athlete, but on petite women it is grotesque and bad for the heart. Maybe Hollywood expects women to be too skinny, but "normal" women are guilty of the opposite. They seem to think every woman should be overweight just because they are. I'd like to see people follow the middle road with a healthy lifestyle and good fat percentages instead of condoning either anorexia or obesity.

Also, according to most women's size charts, a size 14 has a waist measurment of 32-35 inches. Having a waist measurment that fat also puts a woman at very high risk for heart disease and diabetes. If that's what being a size 14 does for your health, I think it's safe to say that it is fat and it is undesirable.

It's sad that she is giving the message to size 14 women that they are FAT and UNATTRACTIVE. Size 14 is the average size - depending on height. But, I guess if it makes her feel better about herself, then it's fine; however, she shouldn't publicize her weight. She must be in need of money.

I agree with Mjoann - just because a size 14 is considered "normal" by US standards today, that doesn't make it healthy. Our society has as a whole grown increasingly heavier each decade. You can blame it on the easy access to fast food (heck, you don't even have to get out of the car at most casual style restaurants anymore to get food) and all the processed stuff we buy at the grocery store. Everyone can moan about how hard it is to lose weight and be satisfied as whole large nation that we are all fat together. There is not denying that at 5'2" a size 14 is probably too heavy - and Ms. Bertinelli has stated that she'd be happy at size 8 - and that would not put her on anyone's skinny list. That would put her at a very heart healthy weight. Who would argue that losing weight to live longer (despite everyone making the excuse that she'd be out of the "norm")? Give me a break (oops, wrong sitcom).

Size 14 is NOT normal for someone 5'2" so unless you have a death wish for her (or yourself) these comments are destructive. A size 8 for 5'2" IS STILL CURVY.

I wish people would stop using clothes size to determine fatness. I do agree that if a size 14 is a 32-35 inch waist, this is a danger a woman's health, but some women that wear a size 14 may not have a waist as big as this and only wear that size due to having a big bust and hips. I don't know if that is the case here, but just wanted to point out that it's not the clothes size that determines someone's 'fatness'. It's how much body fat a person has and very importantly, where they are carrying that fat. Abdominal fat is deadly, but no-one ever died of fat thighs.

I am also 5'2" and wear a size 12/14. That is too much weight on a short frame. 158 pounds is too fat for me. I gained about 30 pounds in three years. Heart disease and diabetes are a possibility with my lifestyle. What would I like to see again? About 126-130 pounds, or 23-24% bodyfat. Guess I better break out the Body For Life book and get to work.
And to the person that said size 14 to size 8 would leave a lot of hanging skin... that is only when you have been overweight for a long time.

Defending her weight and acting like it's OK is just like promoting heart disease and diabetes. IT'S NOT OK TO BE FAT! If you wouldn't want your kids being alcoholics why is it OK to be fat?

All you people amaze me with your size prejudice. Do you have the same attitudes toward racial and religious minorities and the disabled? Just because someone is thin doesn't mean they are any more fit or healthy...or better than anyone else. Some of us who are large are considerably more fit and healthy than some of you stick figures. As long as you eat right and exercise, that's what matters not trying to look like a supermodel! I think it's pathethic that when a person thinks the only thing that matters is being as thin as possible instead of actually being someone who is interesting and has a full life!

No one said anything drastic about being thin is more important than being happy. It is possible to be happy and thin. Actually, I think being in shape and confident about your looks would add to your happiness. You can't do much about race, religion, or mobility but you can and should take pride in your looks and strive for better health.

Anyone who thinks that overweight people can be healthy are delusional. You might be eating healthy foods but if you're overweight, you're eating those foods in portions that are very excessive which is very unhealthy. Just because being overweight is the norm in this country does not make it healthy. If you are overweight, then see it for what it is and don't fool yourself into believing that you're healthy - because you're NOT. Just because being anorexic is not healthy does make it okay to be overweight.

Yes, Valerie was beautiful at size 14, and she's beautiful now. But FAT is a health issue. People should not be encouraging a woman to stay big just because they think she's beautiful that way and she would be making a statement that fat women are not attractive by losing a large amount of weight. The truth is, it is NOT HEALTHY to be that overweight. I agree 100% with the person who said that people should focus on being healthy rather than glorifying either anorexia or obesity. And obesity is a HEALTH PROBLEM just like alcoholism or drug addiction. You wouldn't glorify either of those, so why glorify FAT?
She did a great job losing all that weight, and apparently she hasn't had plastic surgery at all, so she didn't really have loose skin either. At 47...that is just really lucky. She must have really good genes. She looks beautiful!
